For me, transforming a garden is more than just landscaping, it’s about creating a sanctuary. In this video, let me walk you through a full Japanese Zen garden transformation for a Bungalow/Semi-D at The Glades, Putra Heights.
From a bare yard into a beautiful mini park, featuring my signature Juniperus and Podocarpus from Taiwan. Every tree, river boulder, and grass is specially selected to bring balance to your home garden.

Okay, good morning everyone! Chris Lee here, we’re at Putra Heights. Our new site today – Putra Heights, The Glades. So, I’ll bring you on a short walkthrough what we’re going to transform this whole area into something different. Another sanctuary over here. First of all, this is the main garden over here. As you can see, the original condition is all terrible. But, we’re going to transform this not into a normal landscape, we’re going to make it into a mini park. A mini park where people feel comfortable, they can walk, they can relax, admire. And, over here we’re going to walk through. This is our second area, a small area. But, here technically a little bit difficult because the sunlight is a bit lacking. So, we’re going to do a little bit of grass, we’re gonna plant some trees over here, which don’t require that much sunlight. Basically, this is a play area for a pet dog! 🐶 That, for your information, is a fish pond! And, we got to do a mini garden over here with one of our feature trees, that’s going to be really different. And, finally, we have another main area here. This is to welcome, when people come in through the house to the house, either family or friends and guests, right? They’re going to be welcomed by two very beautiful trees over here. We’re going to turn it into a fantastic home. Stay tuned, stay tuned! Very excited to share Putra Heights project is completed. So, we’re going to start off with a few gardens. This is the smallest one. But, very very very impactful! Because it is right at the car porch. That means once the owner comes in from the car, get down and this is what you’re going to see! Very peaceful. A simple garden with two Juniperus. A bit of river boulders, lamp. Grass that represents island. This is what you’re gonna see when you come in. So peaceful, so relaxing. I love it! What about you guys? Okay, now, we’re going to bring you to the next garden, which is even a bigger surprise. This was what we completed yesterday. I’m going to share a little bit about what trees we use in a Zen garden. Because, you see this a lot. I use these in all my projects. And, why I use it? Here on my right, just look at this tree. This beauty. This is a Podocarpus, but specially imported from Taiwan. So, what’s so special? You can see the leaves over here. They’re rounded. And, this is a male Podocarpus. It got fruits as well! That’s how they got the name. The beauty is in the trunk. Just look at the beauty of this trunk, the size of it, beautiful! The leaves will grow more. And, it’s still so easy to maintain! So beautiful! This tree is easily a 30-40 year old tree. But, the good thing is the leaves do not drop. And, here on my left, this is my signature. My Juniperus! This is what I love to do. It’s a kind of pine tree. A lot of people say it looks like a Christmas tree, YES it is, same family. And, the leaves do not drop as well. This tree is easily about 30+ years tree. Why I use these two trees? Because they give a very natural contour. Natural feeling to the whole landscape. My idea of creating a landscape is not to make it look like a landscape. It’s supposed to look like a park. Everybody can enjoy it. Everybody is asking is it a house, is it a park? That’s why we use these two. One more time, Podocarpus, always the one imported from Taiwan and Juniperus over here, my signature. Finally, this is the main different attraction. Can you hear the sound of water? There’s a fish pond. What’s so special about this is you can see the Juniperus, from here all the way all the way never ending right up to here. Spanning about close to 12-13 feet. And, this part goes right into the middle of the fish pond. And, what’s so special is the fishes can get a lot of shade over here. And, the leaves do not drop. Again, the leaves do not drop. Creates a background, with the sound of water, I love it. What a feeling! Until our next video, have a great day! Okay, signing off. Chris Lee, Zen Landscape Designs Legacy.
