This week marks our final Good Day Gardening segment of the year, and we caught up once again with Jeff Turnbull, owner of Darby Creek Nursery. Fittingly, we started the year wearing jackets and we’re ending the year the same way, with cool temperatures settling back in across Central Ohio.
Even though it’s late in the season, we still have not had a hard freeze, which means it is a phenomenal time to be planting. The garden center currently has most plants marked 25 to 50 percent off, and they remain open seven days a week through Christmas. After that, Darby Creek Nursery will be open on weekdays from Christmas until the first weekend of March.
Jeff shared a few late-season tips as well. You can lightly prune roses right now, but save heavier pruning until after a few hard freezes or later in the winter. While grass seeding season is winding down, it’s still a great time to lay sod, and with the cooler weather, watering doesn’t need to be as frequent.
Looking ahead, Jeff says the nursery is already scheduling landscape projects for early next year, so if you have questions or plans for your yard, now is a great time to stop by for expert advice.
This wraps up our ninth year of Good Day Gardening on FOX28. A big thank you to Jeff Turnbull and the entire team at Darby Creek Nursery for another fantastic season of gardening tips and advice. We’ll see you again in the spring!
