Every year he grows a 2-foot-diameter rosette atop a 2" thick 1 foot tall stem (not etiolated), and gets completely rootbound in a 12" pot. So I behead him. Maybe next year I'll instead repot him up into a 16" pot just to see what happens.
I usually let him callous then stick him into substrate, but this year I'm trying putting the stem into an empty pot with some water in the bottom to provide humidity. The stem end is about 3" above the water. I saw a video where Debra Lee Baldwin did this and waited for a thatch of red roots to emerge before putting the rosette into substrate.

It’s beautiful and I love this for you friend, but for some reason these succulents with the bumps on them give me major ick lol… I just can’t buy them 😫
Knobbly beauty !
