This is my Thai constellation monstera and I noticed it’s growing what looks to me like some sort of mold? Is it good mold like mycelium or bad mold? If it is bad mold what can I do to get rid of it and prevent it in the future?

It’s in a chunky soil mix in a 6 inch pot and only has 5 leaves and one is currently unfurling. I have a moisture meter and only water when it’s pretty dry. I also have started only bottom watering as I’ve been battling some fungus gnats in other plants so just to be safe I’ve swapped all my plants over to bottom watering and the fungus gnats population has decreased drastically lol

    I think that’s just mineral build-up

The white coating on expanded clay is usually a harmless lime or salt evaporation caused by the evaporation of watering water, which leaves minerals and fertiliser residues.👍

Minerals from the water/soil/plant leaching up to the lecas surface. If your plant is historically happy with the water, it’s not a big deal. But I do see residue from the water on the stems. Not the biggest deal but on leaves it can disrupt photosynthesis. So try not to get water on the plant. Might want to look into water softening if you own your home

Idk but a couple of them are screaming 😮 😉

  5. Yeah everybody saying mineral build up is right. Leca is ideally supposed to be washed every month or 2. You just unpot, boil the leca and put everything back when it’s cooled. If it’s mixed with soil I wouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s salt and calcium from tap water. You can use distilled water and this will stop building up, if it’s bothering you. Eventually your plant won’t like it either but that takes a long time. You’ll probably repot the plant before it becomes a problem.

It’s all the mineral salts in cheap mineral fertilizers. 🤷🏽‍♂️
Best for your plants is to switch to living soil. No plant in nature grows on clay pebbles…

Some time of fungi or mineral build up?
