Cacti can be really unique and interesting additions to your landscape. And in aid climates where many other plants need a lot of extra care, they can be a great option to breathe some life into your yard. But some species of cacti also have delicious produce. They can be great for those of you looking to grow your own food. My favorite is the prickly pear. It has two different forms of edible produce with very different flavors and uses. First is its namesake fruit. In late summer, they put out these bright orange, red, or pink fruit that have edible flesh that’s often compared to a slightly tart watermelon. But the actual leaves or paddles of the cactus are also edible. If you’ve ever had npales or cactus paddle soup, this is what you ate. They’re a bit tangy with a unique texture and can be eaten raw or cooked and used in soup and salad recipes. Though tougher to care for and much less productive, the dragon fruit or fruit of the paya cactus is even more delicious. With fruit in a wide variety of colors both inside and out and producing large vibrant blooms from a unique-l lookinging climbing cactus, the paya would be highly praised for its ornamental value alone. But its fruit is incredibly good to eat. With a mild flavor somewhat similar to a kiwi and a rich juicy texture, dragon fruit comes in as a top five fruit in my book. There are a handful of other edible cactus like queen of the night and the apple cactus, but in my opinion, the prickly pear and the paya are far and away the best. So try them out next time you want to plant a cactus and subscribe for more great home farming tips.

Normally I don't like using so many still images in my videos. I feel like it doesn't look great, but my pitaya are not in bloom right now and my prickly pears are still too young. Neither is in particularly high demand here because prickly pears are literally everywhere and dragonfruit is just very niche so I only have a couple of each for my own personal use.
I just wish they wouldn't grow so slow 🙁
