Released in 2014, Over the Garden Wall is a 10-episode miniseries following two brothers: Wirt (Elijah Wood) and Greg (Collin Dean). Throughout their whimsical adventures, more characters join their troupe, like Melanie Lynskey’s Beatrice, a young lady trapped in the body of a blue bird. Over the Garden Wall’s star-studded voice cast is only one of its many strengths, however.
Over the Garden Wall’s short episodes, ranging from 11 to 12 minutes, each function as a vignette for the main duo as they navigate the mystical world they find themselves lost in. From a terrifying and downright demonic woodland entity to a mostly friendly village of pumpkin-headed skeletons, the show has the best of both worlds with wholesome songs and truly spine-chilling creatures.
Despite its runtime clocking in at just under two hours, Over the Garden Wall is a captivating and comprehensive story that makes it a masterpiece fantasy series. Each episode introduces a new character, conflict, or important lore detail, but none feel rushed or overcrowded. Beneath its cozy exterior, Over the Garden Wall is a complex and poignant story of brotherhood, bravery, and a true hero’s journey. While the majority of the miniseries takes place in a supernatural landscape, the penultimate episode (“Into the Unknown”) reveals Wirt and Greg are real children who found themselves in the other world after an accident on Halloween night.
As a result, many believe Over the Garden Wall’s true meaning is a metaphor for death, afterlife, and the absurd purgatory they wade through for the first eight episodes. Given that Wirt and Greg wake up in a hospital, that interpretation is certainly supported by most of the text. However, something darker lurks deeper still.
To commemorate its 10-year anniversary, a stop-motion short also titled “Over the Garden Wall” was released on November 3, 2024.
After Wirt and Greg seemingly free themselves from purgatory— or a shared hallucination, as another prevailing theory claims— Greg’s pet frog glows as a result of something that happened while they were in the dark forest. As such, the open ending suggests the evil creatures they encountered, including the horrifying Beast, were all real.
Some have even drawn parallels between the miniseries and classic mythological texts. The similarities between Over the Garden Wall and Dante’s Inferno could be coincidental— but considering each of Alighieri’s nine circles of Hell are accounted for, it feels like a purposeful translation of the classic poem. This interpretation, while far darker, adds incredible depth and demands an instant rewatch.

It’s A Timeless Seasonal Animation

Regardless of its potential allegory or hidden meaning, Over the Garden Wall remains an easily accessible story for all ages. Furthermore, it’s an especially fitting show to transition kids into horror. There are scary plot twist scenes and nightmare-fueling foes, but there are just as many lighthearted reprieves that prevent Over the Garden Wall from losing its universal appeal.
While most shows have a Halloween-themed special episode, few full series are dedicated solely to the spooky season— and even fewer are successful enough to remain relevant over a decade after initially releasing. Amazingly, nothing about Over the Garden Wall feels dated: the music holds up, the plot is timeless, and the animation style is nostalgic without feeling old.
Rather, Over the Garden Wall only gets better with age. The miniseries won multiple Emmy Awards in 2015, but it was still an underrated gem for many years before its cult following brought it back into the mainstream. Nowadays, many fans make Over the Garden Wall an annual watch, and the dazzling project certainly deserves the acclaim.
