Fun Facts – we used to use the wood for things like long bows and arrows due to it’s flexibility. We also appreciated it’s toxicity and used it for early poisons and the like. It’s so toxic that we use derivates from Yew to make chemotherapy medicines.

As everyone has said, it’s *Taxus* sp. (Yew). The berry part is actually a modified cone scale called an aril that surrounds the single seed. The arils are edible, the seed and everything else is poisonous.

As others have said it is Yew. I think it’s worth mentioning that even the smoke from burning the wood off a Yew tree is toxic.

Interestingly,the aril itself is not toxic,its the inner berry.I’ve watched Thrushes and blackbirds consume these with great gusto for many Years.
