Welcome to my ‘Getaway Homestead’
Let’s grease this with a little bit of solid oil and get some of it in there. Now washers on this side. 10 years ago, me and my wife bought an old house with three and a half hectares of land and a dream to have a place called our home. Slowly renovating the house and working in the garden. We have tipped our toes in the world of homesteading and DIY. With a few lessons learned and many more to come, we feel this is the time to put more effort into making this really our getaway homestead. And we would like to invite you to be a part of our journey. Welcome to the getaway homestead. All right, so I cannot get the mower fixed. I fixed the bearing for the front wheel, but there’s just so many things that has gone wrong with the mower. Um, first of all, the wheels still front wheels, they still uh are looking in different directions. Uh, second of all, and the biggest thing, the gearbox doesn’t work. I don’t know if if it’s the lever, if it’s the gearbox or or what is it. Then there is this uh big crack uh in the part that holds the front wheel. Also, the mowing block has uh a lot of problems. And at this point, I’m a little bit overwhelmed with everything that’s gone wrong with the mower. So, I might need to fix I’m sorry. I might need to just get a new mower. Well, they are really expensive and I don’t want to do that, but I don’t have that much time and knowledge to fix all of that. And also, I need to get the workshop done. Otherwise, I I just have to fix the mower under the stars in the middle of the yard. But meanwhile, for this evening, I think I’m going to just get few more breaks in for the workshop. I really want to get this job done. So, let’s go. [Music] [Music] [Applause] Wow. Such a beautiful evening. No wind, which is rare in here. It would be a very quiet evening if it wasn’t for the combine harvester harvesting wheat in the neighboring field. Oh, heat. [Music] [Music] Oh, heat. [Applause] Now this is real August weather. Dry, warm, combined harvesters working in the neighboring fields. Yeah, had to take a little rest here. Um, well, for this week, things have been progressing a little bit slower than usual. I’ve been a little bit confused and I’m not sure what to do with the mower situation since this mower is beyond my capabilities of repairs uh for now at least. Um but the grass is growing growing like crazy. Uh, this situation is getting a little bit out of control, but I still haven’t decided about should I get a new mower. They’re really expensive. All right, I’ll get a glass of water and let’s continue. This tractor action right next to me is getting a little bit annoying. Wow. Lord. [Applause] tada. Um, all right. And now, as I promised, I want to talk a little bit about the garden, about the big planting that I have planned for the autumn. So, let me show you. here. Uh my property uh goes along this road and uh it’s about 100 m in that direction and it goes for at least 50 m in that direction. So what I want to do here is I want to plant a spruce tree hedge. So there are quite a few already growing. Uh but uh I need at least like 50 plants on this side right here. Where are the tall weed growing? I already planted few spruces in the spring. Um they’re doing just fine. Yeah. Yeah, I know. I need to trim the grass here, but I just don’t have the time because of the workshop. But um so that’s the plan for the um well the front of my property that goes along this road. The reason I want to go for the spruce hedge is because it’s green all year around and it would u uh prevent dust coming from the road into my property. Now, as for this side of my property, this is the northern edge of my land, there is north and so there’s a lot of cold winds blowing from north, especially in the winter. It’s uh freezing the plants in the garden. And I want to uh get this part uh planted with a lot of trees as well. Um, eventually I want to plant the spruce uh hedge around this edge as well, but it’s like that’s a lot of spruce trees. Uh, I don’t think I’m going to be able to do this um this year, but this year uh and I have already started working on that. Uh, in the autumn, I want to plant uh oak trees along this edge. I really love oak trees. Uh as you can see, I have already planted a few. Uh they are growing very well, but uh uh the bunnies have eaten quite a lot of them and some of them have died. So yeah, I want to collect as many oak trees as possible and I will just show you right now how I’m going to do that. So here behind me, you can see a big oak tree. That’s the biggest oak tree I have on my property. And uh if we get closer, there are a lot of little oak saplings under this big oak tree. And also there are um a lot of saplings and even a little uh plants uh oak plants uh in the bushes. Therefore, my plan is to dig out as many of these little saplings, oak saplings as possible and uh to put them in the pot uh ready for the autumn. Uh because if I leave them here, which I totally could uh and it might even be better for them, um I need to mow the grass. uh otherwise they are either going to uh grow into the grass and I’m not going to be not going to be able to find them later or they even die uh or I’m going to eventually mow them or my son is going to mow them uh just because it’s not going not going to be possible to seed them in the tall grass. So that’s the plan. Pot as many oak saplings as possible. As for the spruce saplings, um I’m gonna gather them uh later in the autumn when when I’m going to be able to plant them. Here I have a few uh aspen saplings. Aspen is a very special tree for me because my my house my this property is is basically named after the aspen. Uh, so I cut a few branches in the spring and uh and got them to grow roots and now they are growing and uh this was a little experiment of mine. Uh see if it would work. It works. So, I’m going to plant these in the autumn and next spring I’m going to definitely um um grow even more aspen saplings. So, that’s basically trees for free. And here you can see I already have a few oak saplings potted ready for the planting. And of course, if I’ll get more plants to plant then obviously I will do that. But for now, these are the biggest planting projects for me for this uh autumn. Now, let me quickly show you what my beautiful wife did at the entrance of our house while I was busy with the workshop. Just look at this. She did the path. There’s there’s a rose. A whole bunch of plants that I don’t know what are they. Hydrangeia was already there. More roses. Fern. All right, let’s get back to laying bricks. [Applause] [Music] What? [Music] It’s getting quite high. All right, so I got a little bit more done before we wrap this video up. Uh, I hope you can hear me uh through this noise coming from the tractors, but we’re going to stop here, guys. It’s been a pleasure to be with you, and u if you enjoyed this video, please leave a thumbs up and subscribe if you want to see more. And I’ll see you in the next video here at my getaway homestead. Bye. [Applause]
