Bangay said that while it would have been nice to sell three years ago, he doesn’t regret the extra time at Stonefields.

“We definitely haven’t been sad being here for the past three years – it’s just a beautiful place to live,” Bangay told Domain.

Now he and husband, Barry McNeill, are selling the property with plans to start a new project in the Central Highlands area.

“I’ve really got one more exciting garden in me,” Bangay said.

“I’m 62 this year, and it takes ten years before a garden starts to look good. I don’t want to get too old to enjoy it.”

His next creation will be a massive vegetable garden focused on sustainability and productivity.

While he is eager to start his next garden, selling Stonefields will be bittersweet.

“It’s going to be a real wrench,” Bangay said.

“I’m super excited to create something new, so that sort of helps moving from here. But I’m up here today, and it’s a lovely sunny day and the garden is looking gorgeous, and you sort of wonder, ‘What the hell are we doing, really’.”

Marcus Chiminello and Rebecca O’Donnell from Marshall White Stonnington are selling the estate.

Chiminello believes that the property is likely to sell to a private family this time around.

“Those that will have the appreciation of Stonefields will want to enjoy it as a sanctuary, not necessarily as an attraction,” he told Domain.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house has ample living space.

The Italian-inspired main residence has moody russet interiors filled with bookshelves and sculptural chandeliers.

A particular highlight is the solid marble bath in the master ensuite.

“We really hope someone really lovely comes to enjoy it as much as we’ve enjoyed it,” Bangay said.

“It’s the perfect little getaway up here.”
