The RSPB has carried out a review for the Flatford Wildlife Garden Nature Reserve in south Suffolk which was announced in November last year.

The review concluded that the visitor facilities could change in management or close due to the financial pressures on its retail, cafe and visitor experience.

A statement by the charity said it was one of a small number of sites across the UK where this conclusion was reached.

It said this was due to increasing “global and domestic financial pressures of the past few years”.

The statement added: “We must focus on what we do best and where we can do this most effectively, with the resources available to us.”

“We recognise that Flatford Wildlife Garden has a special place in the hearts of many, and this review is not one we have undertaken lightly.”

“It has taken almost a year, and during that time, the operation of Flatford Wildlife Garden has continued as previously.

“We are extremely grateful for the hard work and commitment shown by the staff and volunteers at Flatford and their dedication in keeping Flatford running smoothly during this period, as well for the support shown by our members and visitors, throughout this time.”

RSPB say they are planning to offer the future management of the site to third parties, either by purchase of the freehold or under a leasehold arrangement.

This will be conducted through a tender process anticipated to begin in late 2025, after sharing their proposed approach with key stakeholders.

They expect this process to be concluded in early 2026, but this will depend upon the interest received and any queries arising.

“We’d like to thank you for your continued interest and support of Flatford Wildlife Garden”, RSPB added.

A spokeswoman for East Bergholt Parish Council added: “We know how important this centre is to both residents and visitors, and we will share further updates as they become available.”

The wildlife centre benefits from the dedication of more than 30 volunteers and was opened in 2019.
