The canopy on my maple has been sparse since we moved in a year ago. This fall, the leaves started falling without changing colour. Got some advice to expose the root flare as the grass and soil were right up against the bark and suffocating the tree.

Dug out the root flare and found quite a bit of rot on the trunk from extended moisture. I assume this is from soil trapping moisture against the trunk for so long. Cleaned out the rot and and let the base dry out a bit but not sure if I should leave it exposed longer or mulch it before winter comes. Any advice would be fantastic ( I really enjoy having this tree)

This Norway maple is on the way out. The root flair ain’t gonna fix those cracks and that rot. Remove and replace with a native

Those trunk inclusions are fatal. You would be better off removing this tree completely. Start researching small native trees and shrubs and do this tree proud by replacing it with something that will add to your backyard oasis.

Remove before your insurance company sees it

I’d would recommend you get some quotes for removal. That tree is going to fail in the near future.

Cut it down nor or pay dearly later.

That tree is doomed. Digging up all those feeder roots will have only accelerated it demise
