Start a community-based garden with Purdue Extension
Purdue Extension-Lake County will offer the Grass to Garden Workshop Series from 1 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 3, 10, 17, and 24 at the Purdue Extension building, 2291 N. Main St., Crown Point. Valpo seeks Rising Star nominees
The City of Valparaiso is seeking extraordinary youth to recognize in their Rising Star Award program. Created in 2024 by the Valparaiso Mayor’s Youth Council, the Rising Star Award celebrates the abundance of responsible, intelligent and hardworking youth that contribute to the success of Valparaiso every day. In its first year, the Mayor’s Youth Council named twins Evan and Ryan Quackenbush as Valparaiso’s Rising Stars. Mrvan accepting Military Service Academy applications
The office of U.S. Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, D-Highland, is currently accepting applications from high school and college students interested in attending a U.S. Military Service Academy. High school seniors and college students are encouraged to apply if they are interested in attending one of the following: United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York; or United States Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut. Additionally, high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to learn about the opportunities the service academies offer. The deadline to submit a completed application to Congressman Mrvan’s office is 5 p.m. Nov. 3. Event offers future college students help filing for financial aid
Professionals will be on hand to help college-bound students and their families open the door to financial aid during College Goal Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 9, at Indiana University Northwest, Hawthorn Hall, Room 454, 3400 Broadway, Gary. Spanish-speaking volunteers will be available. The free College Goal Sunday program helps Indiana students seeking undergraduate admission to a college or technical school in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). During the event, volunteers will walk participants through the FAFSA line-by-line and answer individual questions. Students should attend College Goal Sunday with their parent(s) or guardian(s) and bring the following items: 2024 income and benefits information; and current investment and bank records. Information should be for the student and, if applicable, their parent(s). Students who attend College Goal Sunday at IU Northwest and submit a completed evaluation form will automatically be entered in a drawing for one of five $1,000 scholarships. The winners will be notified and scholarships will be sent directly to the higher education institution selected by the winning students.
