Why has nothing grown in my roommates jarrarium yet?


My roomate made this jarrarium and I’ve been looking for a few hours but I can’t see anything swimming around. Is it all dead or does it need to be fertilized with new pond water?

    I’m an amateur at best, so can’t judge too harshly, but did you guys check any kind of tutorial at all before doing this? Also why do I see peppers and garlic in there?
