California Coast Live Oak.

This tree has been growing like this for decades. I don’t know if it’s a tree planted in that raised planter or if they literally created that around the base of the tree.

I dug a bit around it but I don’t see any roots. I could imagine that whole planter being full of roots if it was in fact planted on top of it as a seedling.

It only just occurred to me that that could be the case.

Any advice/help would be appreciated

Thank you in advance

Hi there, is there anything else wrong with the tree? For example declining canopy, broken branches, mushrooms, etc.

If the trees been growing like this for decades it most likely has adapted to its growing conditions and as long as theres no other conditions of concern it will likely stay that way until something changes

Yeah, that’s not very good for the tree to have its trunk surrounded by dirt like that. It may be beneficial to remove the top layer of soil down to where you start running into roots.

Having seen what bonsai trees can survive, this guy is doing good

Apparently not. It’s been there a long time!

If that were my tree I would dig out as much as I could.
