I'm a out of shape middle-aged woman who just planted her first tree. I know I need mulch, but does it look like an okay job? It's a Monterrey Oak from the good people at Treefolks. I have a second one to plant out front.

Do I take the pot take out? Or leave it in for a bit?

Looks great! Just remember not to cover up the root flair with mulch and water it everyday for at least the first week.

Congratulations on your new tree—it looks good to me! In addition to the mulch, you might want to add mycorrhizal fungi to the soil (various brands at garden stores, it’s like a liquid fertilizer).

I try to keep the newly-planted ones well-watered while it’s warm and then continue to water periodically through the winter, especially before a freeze, so the roots can keep taking up nutrients and growing.
