In an exclusive chat to Express.co.uk, bird expert Tom Ferris – on behalf of Roosty’s – revealed the one plant that can bring a flock of goldfinches and robins to your outdoor space. “Autumn and winter are critical seasons for small garden birds like goldfinches and robins,” Ferris began. “With the right setup, you can transform your garden into a thriving winter refuge for these species.”
Goldfinches, recognised by their red faces and melodic calls, have grown in numbers across the UK in the past decade. This means you can expect to see goldfinches fluttering around gardens from October through to December.
“In fact, these months mark a peak period for sightings,” said Ferris, adding that robins are also noticeable during the same time period.
And if you’re hoping to see these gorgeous birds in your garden, then one beautiful plant can help to attract them.
Ferris confirmed that the holly shrub “offers natural shelter and berries” for the birds.
And, when it comes to caring for both bird species, consistent feeding is key.
Ferris elaborated: “Goldfinches are drawn to nyjer seeds and sunflower hearts, which provide the high-fat energy they need to withstand cold temperatures.
“Placing a dedicated nyjer feeder in a sheltered, quiet spot can make a noticeable difference. Robins, on the other hand, are fiercely territorial and prefer to forage closer to the ground.
“They’re omnivores that enjoy mealworms, suet, and crushed peanuts, especially during frosty spells when insects are scarce.”
Ferris added: “To help both species through winter, prioritise consistent feeding schedules and clean feeders weekly to prevent disease.”
