[Music] Hello friends and welcome to Gardening with Carol. It’s time to do a recap of my first year as a gardener. Um, and it’s been a very fun experience. Um and um I’ve learned a lot as you’re supposed to I guess. Um I have tried to gather um a timeline when I just started and how it’s move along and my harvest and stuff like that. So we can take a look at that before we talk about next year’s garden. So here you go. [Music] Wow. [Music] Wow. [Music] Heat. Heat. N. [Music] [Music] Everyone in the [Music] Hey. Hey. Hey. [Music] [Music] Yeah. Uh I am very very happy with all of this my journey. Um it’s been amazing. Um uh it it was overwhelming. I wasn’t prepared of everything coming in and what to do with it. Um, I’m kind of locked in on certain dishes, Swedish dishes and American dishes. Um, so I wasn’t prepared how I’m going to use all of this. We have given away a lot. Uh, we could have given away a lot more, but um, yeah, overwhelming. And uh, I’m going not to do that this year. I’m going to take it down um quite a bit. Um and my mistakes um it’s the tomatoes didn’t work and I have talked about this in previous videos of why. Uh so I’m going to give this a new try. But I also found a place for them. I’m going to have tomatoes, cucumbers, and I think green beans or sugar snap peas. Um, on the wall here, um, the opposite of the grill, the smoker and the grill. On that wall, I’m going to put up a trellis and, uh, have like the soil and and the plants. So, I’m going to have not much, but a little bit of each. And, uh, the sun is there all day long. So, I think that is a good place. It’s not that windy like it is out in the open. So, that’s my plan. And uh what kind of uh tomatoes and stuff like that? I don’t know. I’m going to keep on with the bell peppers in here back in this outer room because that worked great. Uh I’m not going to uh plant um a gene uh because I I don’t use it that much and uh yeah, I’m I’m just not going to it. I’m going to do a bunch of different bell peppers. Maybe a chili or two. I don’t know yet. But that is my plan. And out there, the potatoes, we can talk about that. Uh we shouldn’t I shouldn’t uh have picked them up at once because they last in the soil much longer. But we got that disease, the the the potato mold disease. So, uh, the foliage got, uh, black and I got panicked. Um, that if I had read up, we should have just put taken off the greens and toss them in the woods or something or composted at the compost station. Uh, and I the the potatoes could have been left in the ground. That would be much better. So, next year I’m going to do that. Um, and I’m going to half the the amount of potatoes because uh it was a bit much for us. It’s fun to give away too, but I think I want to have more space for other things I’m going to plant. I have done a very roughly sketch of the garden. Um, so this is how it’s out here. So, here is the pallets and here is the middle there. I where I dug up. Uh, so I’m going to move potatoes was in this one. I’m going to move them here and I’m going to half it here. I’m going to have garlic here. I I still going to have salad and herbs here because it’s easier for me to go out and pick when I cook. And uh here is going to be zucchini. Zucchini is the best thing I have actually had this year because I love zucchini and you can do so much with it and you can freeze it and you can it’s so it’s a usable vegetable for summer and winter. Uh and here I’m going to have onion yellow and uh red and a little bit of of green leak. They were weren’t big, but it was a lot. And uh yeah, I don’t know. It was too much. And uh what I’m going to focus about next year, uh I’m going I’m not going to plant any cabbage stuff because we got invaded of uh those um um Oh my goodness. um cabbage um worm that ate everything. And I know you can protect with nets and uh um yeah, you know what I mean? But I it was too much for me. I am I am um a bit scared when it gets too much of some some uh animals or insects and stuff like that. and I just it wasn’t fresh at all. Um, so I’m I’m not going to to put down cauliflower and cabbage and um broccoli this year because next year um because I want the garden to be fun, not something that I need to stress out about too much because I am not well. So this I don’t want to put pressure on myself that uh if I don’t do this this would happen and and stuff like that. So I decided I’m going to um focus more on um underground uh vegetables like I I actually wrote it down. Ruta buga rudabaga I don’t know h parsnip celeryak um and beets and and and carrots we eat a lot of that too. So we I’m going to do that. Uh we we have our strawberries here. Maybe we will move them to another place but they are here now and they can be there. But here is going to be the Yeah. the the yeah the the root vegetables. So that is my plan and of course radishes, celery, I mean green onion but not as much as I did this year because um I mean um we are only two people so we we we don’t eat that much and like the beets I love beets but we don’t eat it that much. So, I need to learn how to can um pantry stable and I’m a bit scared of the the pressure caner. Um I I I don’t know why because you just don’t eat it if it’s not okay. But I’ve heard stories like you can get really sick if you do it wrong and stuff like that. But um so that’s a project I’m going to start next year. I’m going to try to learn uh as much as I can because I now I did a refrigerator um pickle on the beets and um the cucumbers and so they are in the fridge and they are delicious but we don’t eat it as much as I thought. Um, and that can be many different reasons why. I mean, this is my first year, so it I I don’t think I was prepared on what’s to come. Um, other preparations, I have got my first garlic. I’m waiting for more and they are going in now in November. Uh, and and this is the best thing for me. This is the We eat so much garlic. Uh so my braid is um going to be out really quick. So uh I’m going to focus on garlic um the most actually because that’s the the thing we we use the most. Um I uh had my um c tomatoes and um all of that stuff that you start growing inside. I had them in the cellar this year. Yeah. But we have a room down there. It’s a old bathroom that they have just started to to tear down. Um so in a couple of weeks, uh we are going to have a carpenter here, a plumber. So we’re going to to fix that room up. It’s not big, but it’s perfect for me to have my plants, my starters and stuff like that so the cats don’t get in and eat them because they love that. And I am so excited. I am going to have my own little green room. So, we’re going to have the electric here to put on some heat and and and lights. And I’m going to just have my little room that I can enjoy the the starting um projects. So that’s really fun. And I’m not going to be scared of heat and cold and and stuff like that. I’m going to have a little fan on them. And I’m going to do it right this time. I hope so. Yeah. Uh it’s been wonderful. but a bit stressful for me. Uh I am a kind of person that that um have a lot of um pressure on myself uh to do it right. Uh and the garden for me is supposed to be a therapeutic calmness and this year not so much because I wanted to do to do perfect and stuff like that. Um and I’m I’m not a professional. But I’m not uh going to be one. I just want to see plant seed and and and get it to grow. Um and flowers, I am not a flower person. H it’s beautiful to look at, but I’m not I’m not that much for it, but I know it’s good for the environment, the pollination and stuff like that. So, I’m going to look up what I like and what um yeah, what what fits out here in in all of the other things, but I’m going to to do a more flower kind of garden, too. And in the corner down there in the in the the grass in the corner, we are going to do a meadow, a a small meadow, but we’re going to have a meadow there. Um just because help the the insects more or what you call. Um, and corn. We Yeah, corn. I’m going to put corn down this time, too. I want to at least once pick corn and grill. That would be great. That would be a a side challenge that uh could be fun to do. And if I succeed, I mean the favorite thing I eaten from America is corn chowder. That is so delicious. But it is best if you have fresh corn to do the stock and stuff like that. So that would be great to have a little bit more for that too once. Yeah, I am babbling along. You know me, I’m not comfortable with this, but I think I got most of the things. um the room downstairs. I’m going to do a video before and after and stuff like that so you can see how But you know I I’m going to film next year’s garden, too. So, um now it’s the garlic that’s um the first thing I’m going to buy fertilizer and and do the the boxes or the pallets nice for them so they can grow big and strong. Uh but I hope you enjoyed this video. Like and subscribe uh if you want to and I will see you next time. Bye. [Music]

  1. We're all so proud of ya buddy what an awesome job you did. Seriously I'm so impressed at what an absolute natural gardener you became in such a short time.
Fantastic & now you know that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. You do what makes you feel comfortable. My sister n law likes to grow those little grape tomatoes which are really firm & sweet & they have different colored ones so, we all get parts of her crops she grows which is amazing & delicious 😂 Maybe try the little sweet grape tomatoes.
    🙏💚🌱🌿🪴🍅🫑🌶🥒🍆🧄🧅🥔🥦🥬🫛🫚🫐🍉🍓🍈🍎🫘🥜👍👏

  2. Congratulations, you did great! I am a retired lady who has gardened for many years. I love it but this year I had health problems and had to stop all but a few pots. I hope to do more next year. There are many things you learn just by doing a garden. I change something every year. I also freeze a lot and added a small freezer to the garage to handle it all. You will find the balance you need in time. 😊

  3. You did an awesome job your first year. I was amazed! If you the food saver sealer machine and bags you can freeze a lot of things.

  4. Carol, you did an amazing job this year. It's always a learning process. So proud of you!!! This is a great video. Loved it!

  5. Plant fall peas to put nutrients back in soil.. you can add a little bit of wood ashes to soil this fall or winter. Mainly good to grow expensive veggies.

  6. I have anxiety & depression, fibromyalgia & chronic fatigue syndrome & I'm always trying to push myself but we can only do what we're able to do. Then everyday is different so you don't know how you're going to feel from day to day. It's like your body is constantly attacking you from the inside. If you have any other health problems you feel so helpless. Just know alot of us understand & we're here for ya & you have come so far & your doing so amazing. We love you & pray for you & Recky & both of your parents. 🙏🤜🤛🫶🤟👍

  7. Do you eat pickled beets? My husband likes them. Everyone is a bit fearful of pressure cooker. Try slowly to use it. You are doing great Carol so just enjoy the process of gardening. In the winter you can store your root veggies in your new green room in the cool dark room. I love your garden and Recky (not) cooking the lovely PRODUCE. ❤

  8. YOU GREW SO MUCH!!! That's amazing! My first year was a complete bust due to insanely hot weather (over 75 days of 100+ or 38+ heat) and then freezing weather 6 weeks early. lol Not much lived. I grow flowers for pest control. I really liked this video explaining how to do it from Gardenary https://youtu.be/FHa8enQ0TKQ?si=PmFwZbZALTsAdDbI Over the past few years, I learned that I can grow herbs really well. And, Okra, Cucumbers, and Lettuce. That's it haahahahaha

  9. May we all just love one another!!,love you both!!,if ever you find someone in need please help!!,we all only live once so let you soul shine for that is what we were created to do!!,praise lord jesus CHRIST always amen!!.

  10. Awesome job. I don't know much about gardening, but what about a juicer for some of your surplus.

  11. Awesome job even though it was a lot for you! I really enjoyed watching your gardening progress and the things you learned along the way and the hindsight about the potatoes. Looking forward to the new garden even though you’re cutting back on the amount and work on your starter area in your house. That’s going to be interesting to see! I remember showing my mom your garlic and when you said that you were going to do a braid, then you had the picture of it in the video and she had a smile on her face. That was awesome to see.

  12. Great Job of the Produce!!!! This Year went by so fast…. I remember when you were so scared of a wrong step and not you are the Gardening Queen!!! 😀

  13. Your garden turned out so much better than mine. Caroline experience been having gardens for 40 years. I am very proud of you!
By the way girlfriend that color of your sweater looks amazing on you.

  14. They say a good gardener has a green thumb, Carol…YOUR ENTIRE BODY IS GREEN! You're the gardening queen. I planted a section of wild flowers; both the bees and butterflies loved it. I'm sure you will find a wildflower seed mix native to your area. My sister found a perennial wild flower mix, so her flowers come back every year. I have been wanting to can fruits and veg too, but I am worried I will time the boiling wrong and poison myself.🤣So, I'm thinking of getting an electric canner so I won't stress myself out. I have an anxiety disorder, so I understand. 🤗

  15. OMG Carol!! You did a great job for your first year! 🥳🎉 I do want to say something about perfection – its a myth. At least the perfection we humans define is a myth. All we can do is our best and let nature take care of the rest; that is true perfection.

  16. Congratulations on your great harvest. I hope you enjoyed gardening, it should be time with earth and meditate. Remember each year is different because of weather. I put my strawberries in hanging planters and it keeps them away from animals, and then after the season I put them in the grown for the winter. You are doing a great job on YouTube,,and this is a great video.

  17. You did such a great job, Carol! With plants of any kind, you can only do so much and then Mother Nature takes over. Some things I've planted did great for no apparent reason and other things that are supposed to be 'fool proof' I just can't get to grow. I just shrug it off and try something different the next year.

  18. Tomatoes may be easier in a green stalk planter where they can grow vertically but are more contained and easier to pick.

  19. I enjoyed this video very much. It was like a casual conversation while we all sat at the table. If you did not make mistakes while growing your garden then you do not learn. People who do not make mistakes do not push themselves to grow.

  20. First year?!? Miraculous! Such a great job Carol. I’m so happy you have a way to express your love for the land. Keep your hands in the dirt, friend! ❤

  21. I would suggest you push thru your fear of pressure canning. After you do your first test run, you will laugh because how uneventful and easy it was. Follow a trusted recipe and read the manual that came with your pressure canner. I don't know what pressure canner you have, but there is a difference between a pressure cooker and a pressure cooker/canner. A pressure cooker has a set pressure and is only for cooking food. A pressure cooker/canner is designed to have a way to set different pressures for canning different foods. As far as it blowing up, if your vents aren't clogged it won't blow up. All the videos of pressure cookers blowing up are because they were filled too full and food blocked the vents, and to be honest, I think the pressure cookers were tampered with so they would explode to make a better video.

  22. Carol, you shouldn't expect to be a pro at it from the beginning. We're all still learning new and different ways to grow stuff. Your garden and everything it produced this year looks wonderful. Now don't forget to rotate your gardens so that you don't have the same fertilizer mixture constantly building up in one bed too much. It really helps to rotate the beds. Corn is a good way to drain any bed of any excess fertilizer build-up. That should also be a good place to plant the tomatoes next year. Consider fertilizing with some cow or horse manure if you can get a hold of some. It's a great natural fertilizer and I have grown some massive tomatoes that way when I grew up in Eastern NC.

  23. I, too, am planning my first flower garden for next year. The first priority for me is to plant little or no maintenance flowers, so that I don't get overwhelmed. I'm getting older now so I am really planning for future years when I can't do as much. I can always add more later if I want to. I'm glad you are changing your garden for next year, gardening is learning and adjusting. Being stressed and overwhelmed is not fun, and if it isn't fun, stop doing that part of it. Do what you're doing and adjust. You did more in your garden then I could ever do, and it was your first time! Concentrate more on what you learned and less on what didn't turn out that great. I remember when you were just dreaming of having a garden, and you didn't know a thing about it. My goodness, you've come so far! Just be proud!

  24. You did great on camera by yourself. And your first garden was very successful, congratulations ! Good luck with your next garden too

  25. I think you will LOVE canning once you get into it. Don’t be scared. I’ve canned for years and never gotten sick. I’ve seen that you were gifted both a water bath canner and a pressure canner so those will take care of both your high and low acid garden produce. Keep in mind that you will need someplace to store those jars long term so start thinking about where to put shelving that can hold around 3-4 deep of your preferred canning sized jars.
And the best thing about a garden, in my opinion, is sharing it with friends and family while still having enough stashed away for you and your house until the next seasons crops come in. Then the processing and canning starts over again so you fill out your pantry again.
You and Recky are doing a fantastic job. What you CAN do is enough. You were not put on this earth to make EVERYONE happy. You are here to live YOUR best life. Not what others think your life SHOULD be. Accept your faults/mistakes and consider them happy learning/growth experience unless YOU want to change. None of us are perfect. We are all imperfectly perfect. You’re loved. Not in spite of your flaws, but because of them. Time to hunker down and bask in the gooey warmth of just being you without worrying about what others think about you. Just be happy with yourself as the beautiful, loving person that you have become and do what you can when you can.

  26. Carol, you did a spectacular job on your first garden ! Now you have more of an idea on what you want more of and what you don't want to waste time and space on foe next year. As for tomatoes, some years seem to be better than others. Try maybe different types. I used to can and freeze too much but a fellow gardener mentioned she only processed 52 qts ( averaging 1 qt a week to use). Here i thought i was brilliant canning 100 qts ! You don't want too much holdover . And feel good about sharing with neighbors and family. Fresh produce is always welcome . Good job 👏👏👏👏👏

  27. A great way to use eggplant is to peel and dice it into small pieces, steam it, mash it and put it in your marinara spaghetti sauce. Tastes great and makes the sauce thick.

  28. If you end up with a lot of beets it is fun to slice them thin and dry in a low oven to make them crispy beet chips, They can have salt, no salt, a sprinkle of sugar, or whatever seasoning you like. they are like potato chips and are good with dips as well. As a kid I wanted spinach and beets everyday, so my mom came up with a million ways to make them.

  29. You did such an amazing job for your first year. I'm so proud of you. I can't wait until next year. Maybe get an additional refrigerator for the garage for the canned/jar items you make. 💖💖

  30. I really recomend growing Brandywine Tomatoes. Its widely held by American tomato gardeners to be the best tomatos. Its an old, historical American variety.

  31. I love gardening. I gardening vegetables in unincorporated Orlando. It's a full-blown war with bugs and nematodes and fungal diseases. But we got a lot of advantages here too.

  32. All that extremely hard work paid off! Your garden did amazing this year
. …all those gorgeous colors! Your thumb is definitely pretty green 💚👍🏻
