Grab a sledgehammer* and get out some stress.

    *edit spelling

nothing a sledgehammer and a bit of elbow grease can’t fix.

it really does highlight that some people are fuckin driven by the will for homogenous concrete misery.

those planters were filled by someone void of all hope,

I wish you luck in your endeavour to reverse the sadness

I like them for flower beds, so I’d cut and dig out the concrete trying to save the brick and wall.

It’s a stage for kids to put on plays and concerts. I mean, it even has a runway!

You should pave over with asphalt.

Drought tolerant native perennials with a good layer of wood chips or mulch to keep the soil from baking. Make sure that the plants you choose aren’t too big for the space, or if they are, just be ready to trim them back once a year.

    What climate? Southwest US? Succulents.

Raised beds on either side with a potted tree in the middle.

rent a jack hammer from a hardware store and break up the concrete.

Looks like a spot that maybe little to no direct sunlight because of the wall? I’m wondering if that’s why they concreted it up to begin with. Full shade plants would probably be the only option, probably not any vegetables.

I hate concrete. So easy (and lazy) to put in. Such a monumental pain in the tookus to get rid of!!!

  12. Stoked_Otter

Perfect excuse to rent a jackhammer.

  13. Great place to put a pot garden and a fountain to attract birds and insects.

Use it as a theatrical stage lol. Perfect for charades.

Either take it out or get some interesting large pots.

A water feature or fountain into a bowl-shaped basin on the peninsula. Row of tropical or Mediterranean-looking plants planted into pots behind.

Install a statue of dear leader or religious icon or use it as a bandstand for the local jazz band.

Everyone saying sledgehammer. Sigh. You’re not going to be able to get the concrete out with ruining the bricks. My advice is to get some big beautiful planter pots and plant some nice olive trees or other trees / bushes you fancy. Will fill the space nicely

Where does all the water go when it rains?

This looks like a perfect place to erect a shrine.  Some people think that shrines are reserved for religious figures or famous dead people, but they are so much more than that.  Your shrine can include old sports trophies, action figures, or even pictures/statues of your cat.

With that wall, how much sun do those planters get?

What did the prior owner have there?

I’d figure out why they put cement there in the first place.

In any case, if I wanted to remove it I’d drill or cut some relief into it, then have at it with a sledge or a jackhammer. I might get an estimate for it too.

Honestly what you can do is put plants there but pots! You can layer them with different plants it will look cool.

The bed in front of the door is there to catch water from the downspout? Is it working? If so there must be quite an amazing dry well or well designed and maintained drainage system involved. If it leads to a drain then you can remove that weird planter and pave with something ornamental like a patterned pebbles or put in good soil and plant with a walkable ground cover to absorb some water but still have a normal traffic pattern.

I’d remove the other planter and since it is also blocking normal traffic flow pave with ornamental paving.

I’d put up trellises for vines along the wall with small perennials and such filling in.

Mourn, put potted plants on top

  25. Tiny_Garlic5966

Put a potted plant on it with a big vase

  26. Fenton69

I’m agreeing with the potted plant garden. Some fun pots to look at. Great opportunity to play with palms or elephant ears. Leaving some low ones too for wall space for art hanging on the fence.

If you dont feel up to getting rid of the concrete, you could probably build another planter directly on top and just garden in that. Might look nicer than having lots of plastic pots there…

  28. Mironin

Get some free standing planters and place them on the dias. 🤣

  29. holliebadger

No I think there’s a chance plants wouldn’t grow in the becuase of various reasons. Potted plants can be put on top and moved around. If you dig it out make sure the drainage is there.

  30. sparklyh0e

Add a water fountain in the middle and create a trellis wall behind it with vines or roses.

If you break up the cement you’re going to break up the brick and it will look junky when you put in existing brick with new mortar on one part and old mortar mix. There will be a contrast in the coloring of the lines between the brick and it will be noticable.

  32. pandapower63

Put a big huge flower pot there with a plant.

Some Mexico style pots with plants and lights
