Phytolacca decandra, pokeweed being the common name, not in the nightshade family but still poisonous so don’t eat it

When my brother and I were young we would make ink out of the poke weed berries and we bought a calligraphy pen and would write letters to each other lol. Good times

There’s a subreddit called something like r/itsalwayspokeweed that will help you with this. It’s poke weed. The berries are quite poisonous. It’s good for wildlife. And… There’s a lot more where that came from…

Definitely not nice shade. It’s poke weed. It is poisonous but some people actually think there are a medicinal and health benefits to it in small quantities. I don’t trust that myself personally, but not something that I would recommend.

The berries were used as ink during the Civil War. Whole plant is poisonous.
Phytolacca americana. Berries will make a magenta dye, color will eventually fade with prolonged exposure to light and heat. Don’t eat the berries, young leaves used to be eaten cooked or in salads. Leaves used to be sold in cans in grocery stores long ago, my understanding as late as the 1960’s.

Toxicity: All parts of the pokeweed plant are toxic to humans and livestock if ingested. The toxins can also be absorbed through the skin, so it is recommended to wear gloves when handling the plant.
Symptoms: Ingestion can cause symptoms such as cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. In larger quantities, it can lead to more severe reactions including increased heart rate, convulsions, and in extreme cases, death.
Reproduction: Pokeweed reproduces by seed, and a single plant can produce thousands of seeds annually. The seeds can remain viable in the soil for many years. Birds often eat the berries and help spread the seeds.
Management: Pokeweed can be managed by hand removal, cutting the plant multiple times during the growing season, or applying herbicides.

As others have noted, it’s pokeweed, not nightshade. In addition to the warnings about toxicity that others have offered, note that the sap of pokeweed is an irritant and can cause some pretty nasty blistering rashes in some people. When ripping this stuff out, use gloves.

Raccoons eat them like crazy and leave piles of crap full of poke

It is not a deadly nightshade. In fact it isn’t even part of the nightshade family. Interestingly, Peppers and Tomatoes ARE part of the nightshade family… but I digress.
This is an American pokeweed. Also sometimes called poke salad. Scientific name Phytolacca Americana. It is, in fact, toxic. All parts of the plant are toxic, with the roots and berries being the most toxic. However, the leaves and stems can be boiled and drained to make them edible, but if you don’t know what you are doing, it is best not to try. The berries are also usable as a dye. Unlike nightshade, pokeweed is not overtly noxious to handle, and as long as you don’t ingest the plant, it usually will not hurt you, but it is recommended to wear protective clothing if you are cutting them.down or removing them, as the sap can be a mild irritant. Nightshade, on the other hand, is noxious, and if you get too much of the plants’ oils or juices on you, it can make you sick.
Pokeweed is extremely invasive. It is an annual, so it comes back every year. It puts down a very deep taproot and any part of the taproot left in the ground will produce a new plant. The berries get scattered by birds and small mammals and will also produce new plants and the plant will also grow offshoots from the main root. If left unchecked, pokeweed will proliferate through your yard choking out most other plants around it including woody Bushes. It is best to remove them while young before the root gets deep or kill them with herbicide after they mature but before they flower and fruit.

Devil’s walking stick not nightshade but also poisonous

Pokeweed berries n yes they’re toxic if ingested. Most of the toxin is in the stem and leaves, but there are traces in the actual berries. Do NOT eat and be sure to wash your hands if you touch them. They’re rather harmless despite being toxic, they’re also invasive species so if you’re going to rip it out make sure to take the roots and everything.
