My back yard has dappled shade and lots of moisture, so previous attempts to grow grass left muddy bare spots. Three years ago I decided to let it go to its natural state, and dichondra replens, wild strawberries, and violets popped up on their own. I added mini clover and more violets. Now the far back yard is full of violets that turn the hill purple in late spring, and the yard looks lush with the combo of green groundcovers. I mow every few weeks so any tall grasses or plants don’t start dominating the space.

Much of our lawn is violets, clover, and wild strawberry – I absolutely LOVE it. I’ve been very surprised to discover how well it all holds up under foot and how quickly is bounces back after a mow. The early Spring action is just delightful!

My back yard looks about the same. Similar habitat to yours. Grass didn’t grow, because it was too shady. My yard abuts a wooded area and is very shady and wet. I quit mowing and the violets took over. Now I mow about once a month. The grass is gradually disappearing. I’m in SE Wisconsin.
