First time with a potted canna – just finished and starting to die back. Should I cut it all the way to the ground for winter?

Cut to the base. Bubble wrap the pot. Fat layer of straw pegged on top. Pray.

I’ve had a canna like this for about 3 years now. Never done anything to it to protect it over winter and it’s come back every year. Not saying you shouldn’t do anything but they can often be hardier than you think

I have black cannas that grow over 2m, so just cut them down to the base and leave.

However, as yours is in a pot, maybe keep it somewhere indoors for the winter (still cut down).

I usually just leave them in pots and they come back okay (better than they do if in the ground).

An alternative is to let them dry out, cut off dead foliage, remove from soil and store in something like hessian sack in garage. Pot on and divide if needed in the spring when they start shooting. Like this they often seem to have head start over those left in pots.

BTW they are very easy to propagate if you save some seeds.
