Much has been written about plants, flowers, and music, from the gorgeous flora that has inspired great classical works, to studies that look at how houseplants react when particular tunes are played, to the blossoms gracing the album covers of timeless symphonies.

But one of the more unusual and intriguing corners of this intersection of flowers and music has to be compositions that draw ethereal inspiration from the DNA sequencing of orchids.

You can explore that intriguing intersection on Oct. 18 when “Orchidées” blooms at The Huntington.

Tickets for the show are sold out but a $10 live stream will give orchid enthusiasts listening from anywhere the opportunity to bask in this offbeat and uplifting experience.

Composed by Nick Roth and Kate Ellis, the cello piece “… traces the 100-million-year evolution of orchids by translating their DNA sequences into music accompanied by time-lapse footage of blooming specimens from The Huntington’s orchid collection.”

Science meets sound meets spectacular floral splendor in this one-of-a-kind production; find out how to purchase a livestream, and other important details, here.

A bounty of blossom-y beauty beyond the concert is happening at The Huntington on Oct. 17-19 as the 9th Annual International Orchid Show and Sale sets up stunning shop.

Attendees will view “hundreds of exotic specimens” at the landmark’s Brody Botanical Center, and have the ethereal opportunity to browse blossoms and orchid-inspired items.
