If you are ready to pack away the lawnmower and leave the lawn to deal with until next spring, experts say you could be missing out on a chance to get it into great shape. This month is the ideal time to give your grass some much-needed nourishment which will help it thrive.

Despite the chillier, autumnal weather, October is a critical month for gardeners to feed the grass ahead of winter. The one thing you should be giving it is nitrogen, say lawn experts.

According to nature enthusiast Luminita Toma from Lawn Starter, this essential nutrient for giving your turf its rich vibrant shade is nitrogen. She said: “No matter the type of grass you have, it needs just the right balance of nutrients to achieve a deeper green colour.”

There are plenty of shop-bought products, of course. But there is another way to get your lawn a rich shade of green and one is by using something many of us will already have in the kitchen.

Gardening experts at Southside Plants insisted it’s “simple” to create a “homemade organic natural fertiliser”. All you need is your left over coffee grounds which many will simply bin.

But they can provide the minerals and nitrogen to transform your grass.

To make this DIY fertiliser you will need two cups of coffee grounds, five gallons of water and a spray bottle.

To prepare it, begin by combining the two cups of used coffee grounds with the five gallons of water and allow to sit overnight, reports the Mirror.

Then, filter the mixture into the bottle and apply it to the earth or spray it straight onto your grass. It’s not the caffeine in coffee that gives your grass a boost, but the nitrogen and trace minerals found in coffee grounds.

These nutrients are released at a slow pace, which is a major advantage over synthetic fertilisers that release quickly. The nutrients in coffee grounds break down gradually, giving the turf more time to absorb them, resulting in stronger, healthier grass for longer.

The advice comes after gardeners were told to sprinkle cinnamon powder on their lawns.

The cheap and ‘easy way’ to boost the appearance of your grass was shared by OutdoorGuide.com who said it was an eco-friendly alternative to using chemicals on the lawn.

The cinnamon repels insects and pests including aphids, mosquitoes and ants and it will alter stop squirrels from digging to bury food.

They said: “Cinnamon isn’t just a one-trick pony when it comes to pest control.

“It boasts a versatile repertoire, capable of warding off and even deterring larger nuisances like squirrels and raccoons, making it a comprehensive solution for safeguarding the grass in your garden.”
