A pop-up traffic garden event is set for 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 18 at Father Travassos Park in Fall River.
The event, organized by the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program, aims to provide a safe, car-free environment for children to practice biking skills and learn the rules of the road, according to a community announcement.
Unlike most public traffic gardens, this event will provide bikes for children to use, courtesy of MassBike in partnership with the MassDOT Safe Routes to School Program. Several bicycles, supplied by Mass Bikes for All, will be raffled off, giving children a chance to take a bike home. Free bike helmets will be distributed, courtesy of the Truesdale Health Foundation Inc. Every family attending will also receive a goodie bag, donated by Tufts Health Insurance, filled with resources and goodies.
The event is open to the public, wheelchair-accessible and welcomes children of all abilities. Volunteers will be on-site to assist participants as needed.
“We are excited to bring this unique event to Fall River and provide a safe and welcoming opportunity for children and families to learn about bike safety,” representatives from Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District (SRPEDD), the City of Fall River Health Department and Love Your Block said in the announcement.
The rain date for the event is Oct. 19.
