Moved into a new home this past summer and, well, I just don't love these balls of cypress in a hillside behind our patio. They are healthy and happy (unlike the many other nearby shrubs that have been decimated by deer over the past few years) so I will not get rid of them. But their form, well, I just don't like the formality of it. I am planning to plant a more natural, casual area.
My question- if I don't keep up the pruning, will it look messy? And for about how long (I can handle a year or two as it grows). Or, since they are planted so close, will they start to grow "into" each other and branches begin to die off?I believe that they have been pruned to this shape for over 10 years. I can live with the little balls of gold creeping up my hillside, I just like a more natural style.

I know this is a long shot, but did the previous owner or whoever paid for that garden leave a design for it? It is very strangely layed out and I have a feeling that part of it was pulled out at some point and replaced but not with the intended plants.
I don’t know if thats the same variety, but I prefer them left un trimmed. If it looks bad then you know what to do.
Trim them and relocate them while you still can. They’re nice. They have good shape.
I have one in my front yard that I have never trimmed. It grows in a shaggy appearance, but I would not define it as unkempt.
I would transplant them this all to be further apart, and then let them re-establish and grow. These things can get very large if given the right conditions. I think my plant’s tag said mature size was 8′ by 10′.
You could loose a few of them?….You could use the photo and take out a few on photoshop see how it looks first? Then allow the others to grow if you want to keep them?????????.. but just a suggestion.
