Plans for more than 300 homes forming part of a new “garden village” near York have been approved.

Redrow Homes Ltd plans to construct 314 house in Huntington on land near North Lane and the A1237.

The scheme is the first of three phases, with the overall project expected to deliver a total of 970 homes and a community hub, shops and country park.

A master plan for the wider scheme was approved in 2022 after the then Conservative government stepped in following an appeal from the developer to the Planning Inspectorate.

The plans, which were first submitted in 2018, were approved after it was ruled that the council had taken too long to decide on them.

At a meeting on Thursday, councillors heard that either a new primary school would be built to serve the homes or contributions would be made to expand existing ones.

The plans feature 212 homes set for sale on the open market, with 94 set to be available at affordable rates.

A further eight plots have been set aside for self-build homes, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Chris Cullwick, Liberal Democrat councillor for the area, said North Lane was currently too narrow for a central white line to be painted and called for road improvements.

More needed to be done to create a “multi-generational” community, he said, as the plans were “predominantly and disproportionately” family homes.

“There’s no provision for older members of the community, younger people or first-time buyers,” he added.

Jennie Hambridge, the developer’s agent, said Redrow Homes would continue to work closely with the local community and the council.

“We will continue to address any concerns and mitigate the impacts of the construction of the site, traffic and access,” she said.

“The plans will deliver homes that support inclusive and accessible living.”
