Gold Garden Cafe, a restaurant and bakery which has been operating for 25 years, will shut down one of its two stores in Hong Kong as its lease expires.

The closure of its store on 316 Castle Peak Road is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, the business said in a recent Facebook post. It will however maintain the main branch at number 314 on the same road.

The cafe has long served local favorites like macaroni soup, set meals, and fried spaghetti, complemented by a bakery offering egg tarts and bread, according to The Standard.

The business expanded over time, opening a second location at 316 Castle Peak Road that specialized in small plates and rice dishes.

Known for its signature egg tarts with over 100 layers of crisp, flaky pastry and a smooth, fluffy filling, the cafe has drawn both locals and tourists. Other beloved dishes include satay beef noodles and stir-fried black pepper spaghetti.

The owner, Davis Ng, said that the newer branch, operational for four and a half years, has not been profitable and has underperformed compared to the main branch, especially amid a challenging economic climate.

Ng took over the business from its previous owner more than a decade ago, retaining the original kitchen staff to maintain food quality.

He said he wanted to focus his efforts on the main store, as the unsatisfactory business performance of the second branch and the difficulty of combining both have urged him to shut down the second store, according to South China Morning Post.

He expressed regret over the closure, noting there was no initial intention to shutter the branch. However, the sudden staff departures prompted a shift in focus to the main store.

He is committed to finding a larger space to accommodate more customers in the future.
