    Vascular bundles from the stem of a herbaceous plant. the cross-links are probably the nodes where the leaves join. Most of the plant material has rotted, only the lignified xylem remains.

    Was this found near a creek/river? I believe these are the rhizomes of Justicia americana, water willow. They are very unique and intentionally develop that way to stabilize gravel/sandbars where they occur.
