Nope. 6b here, and I just seeded last week. May want to rake it in this next time. And/or add soil/compost on top of the seed. Looks like only the areas where you aerated grew.

Brah that ground looks like concrete adding more seed won’t do anything
PotentialMillionaire
Soil look compact. Probably try to aerate the area using a core aerator before next year’s seeding
ribbon_bully_1972
As a lover of healthy turfgrass that compacted substrate hurts my soul. Please aerate & till & add topsoil so I don’t hurt myself.

I’d look into wearing some spiky golf shoes and walk around a bit. That hard ground needs some aeration.
mikehill33
Rake it, add seed, top with compost and hay.
puffyshirt99
You might as well throw money on the ground if you just want to waste it. Adding more seeds won’t do anything.
cphug184
Did you aerate once already? Whoever did it just did one pass. Seed that fell in the holes stayed moist and germinated. Other seed didn’t. Suggest not enough water. If it’s fescue, water it lightly 2x a day for theee weeks. Reseed and water ASAP. Aerate again if you can-tear it up.
Not all seed will germinate due to soil temps dropping but you’ll get some more in the spring.

What is all that rock? Rake that up, aerate then repeat.

Remove the rocks

That’s basically construction fill dirt. You need to core aerate, add top soil, compost, and tons of water

Sometimes I think these are bullshit posts …

To all those people that ask – “isn’t aerating overblown?”. If its otherwise healthy, maybe, but not if this is what you’re working with. Poster lawn for when aeration is needed.

You need to use a garden weasel/lawn weasel to break that soil up and get it loose. Throwing seed down on that compacted soil ain’t gonna do a thing.

Yeah I think it’s too late now

You need a full seeding, not an aeration and overseeding. This is what happens when you aerate and overseed bare spots. I understand why you wanted the aeration, that is compacted as sin, but you need an aeration and full seeding, like a slice seeding or honestly, you might want to till some sand and compost into that soil to loosen it up and fight further compaction before seeding over the top of that.
AtmosphereReady6599
I’m still learning myself, but if it was me I’d be endeavouring to loosen that ground up a bit because it looks as hard as concrete. The small spots are probably the only place the poor roots could find anywhere to take hold, and the rest is solid.

You gotta loosen up that compacted dry soil. Core aerate, use a rake or a garden weasel. You could also try a soil conditioner to help loosen up the soil. Jonathan Green sells a decent one. Also rake out those rocks. Once that’s done, add more top soil and the seed again. Increase the amount of water there too.

Prepare for spring that soil looks in terrible condition, aerate , add topsoil and overseed in spring
EAGLeyes09
It’ll never be the right time for overseeding this. Need major cleanup of that rock and debris first. Aerate the hell out of this first, water and then add seed and drop half inch top of top soil and level it a bit. Water water water.

That hair plug lawn is the result of aeration. Same thing happened to me, I researched and it’s common.
The correct answer is slot seeding. Cuts shallow lines in the soil to encourage seed soils contact, there are so many more and well distributed places for the seed to wash into and thrive.
Turf grass might not be as good as dandelions at rooting into compacted soil, but it absolutely can and will, just let it.
If you can afford to turn over the soil 12” Down and mix in something like pine fines (compost will break down too fast), go for it. Or plant thing, give basic water and fertilizer, and let nature do the thing it’s beeen doing millennia
