hello welcome my name is Nancy and I garded in zone 4B 5A here in Minnesota in today’s video I will tell you why and what seats I will be starting indors in January I will also show you which seats need color certification and how to do it I have a lot of seeds to sew so I will divide probably sewing seeds in January in two parts I will put time stamps uh on the seats that I’m I will be sewing so you can Escape some parts if you want let me tell you the three reasons why to St some seeds in January the first one is some seeds need to be called stratify and this could vary from one week two weeks to 30 or 60 days the second one is germination some seeds take longer to germinate you can go from 7 days to 14 days to up to 35 days to germinate the third one is some seeds just take longer to grow like for example colos or geraniums next we’ll be doing CER certification so let me separate the seeds that need CER certification and for this we will need some plastic bags a marker and some tape okay here are the bags next let me get the marker and the tape uh the reason you need this this is because you need to write uh the date of when you’re placing your seats in the refrigerator and the first method that I will be doing is what is called the dry colder certification and later I will do the moist color certification so I just need to write down the date and today is January 5th and the first uh seats are the Delphinium so this ones will need to been the refrigerator for 2 weeks I will go more in detail when I plant the seeds uh so I have all of this I’m going to place them inside the bag I also have more uh Luxburg and more delphiniums so I yeah there’s the other one too so place them in the bag and these are ready can seal the bag these are ready next will be the bbina so these bbas I grew last year and they did not uh need col certification but this variety the one from swallow tail this is a new one for me the vanity I’m just trying to see if it needs CER certific doesn’t say anything this one no colder certification the one from Eden Brothers except this one here see soota says put in a SI black bag and refrigerate for 7 days and then germination takes 21 to 30 days so I will put this in a ZL bag and the other ones I will just follow the instructions in the packet you guys but again I did not need to color St stratify last year but I just follow want to follow instructions on that one this one has the Snap Dragons this is H from last year too I going to finish the seeds so this one let me see this one says to put in the freezing Freez for 48 hours so we’ll do that too so I have two packets next I will write the date the next seats are the penamon Rocky Mountain so this one requires 30 to 60 days for cold the certification this one the lavender English requires 30 days for colder certification this is gar and this one uh requires uh this one needs moist colder certification and requires 60 days that’s a long time you guys these are the two that I will be doing Mo Scher certification so for that I will need a paper towel plastic bags and some water I almost forgot this Lilia from Edan Brothers needs color certification the other ones that I grew last year from Botanical interest they need color certification but again I’m just going to follow the instructions on the on these packets so I will do that and and we’ll put it here with the Snap Dragons so I have these two bags one for the burbine and one for the Gar so I’m placing the tape and then I will write the date these are ready next I will have the paper towel and I will place the seeds on top of the paper towel so we’ll start here here with the Gar so let me just show [Music] you I am doing about 10 seats so I’m just going to place it here on the right side then I will fold the paper towel just like this and then I will place it inside the bag just like this and then I will add the water just a little by little just to dump the paper towel uh this is ready so I will do the same thing with the BINA [Music] this seeds are ready for the refrigerator let’s go downstairs this refrigerator is in my basement it’s just for uh drinks so this is where my seeds are going to go [Music] I almost forgot about my fox cloves I will start Endor the ones that will Bloom this year so this is an old seed this is from Eden Brothers and I have um the ones from Botanical interest so this was one IBL this year so that will do winter sewing and this is from Johnny seeds this is the Camelot uh varieties so they will room this year and I have this dalmi Peach from last year and I just bought a new one too but I will uh s the seeds from the old seeds from last year so we’ll do the same thing put them in a plastic bag and then in the [Music] refrigerator okay you guys so I’m going to put this in the refrigerator and I’m also going to I forgot that the snapd dragons go in the freeze freezer I’m going to take those out so I’m going to put those over here and actually I’m going to oops I’m only working with one hand here I’m going to take the this out the Okay so put this on top I grab my this um clo so there we go and we’re going to put this in the freezer so freezer there you [Music] go so I will need to take it out um the 7th right January 7th okay so there we go you guys another one that I need to put in the refrigerator the nikana so I did find some information on another not in here cuz it doesn’t say anything about fridge but um I wrote it down here so I’m going to put this in the fridge um along with the other ones okay and we’re going to start um planting the seeds but before we do that I’m going to show you the materials that I will be needing and I will show you three maybe two different types um so this is what I will be using we’ll do that in couple minutes okay but the first thing I’m going to do is I’m going to put all the seats away so I can okay so color Bells right there um salvas in one side the balloon flowers LAN colus the ones that I will be doing last are the colos I need to bring my colus these are the Maverick the geraniums this is the helot Trope okay last year when I bought um from Burpy the SE starting mix I know notic that is it was just cocoa fiber and it my seeds did really great with both so I’m going to I just bought the cocoa fiber and I think I got a pack of nine blocks so that’s what I’m going to use and I need to get water to get this started so we’re going to open this I want to make a mess oh my goodness that’s so me you know why you guys I am going to I’m want to put this first my handy dandy putting say putting mat if you want to check on my Amazon store I have um uh some items in there you want to check them out okay so this over here and I’m just going to add uh warm water [Music] yeah I I was reading about cocoa fiber and it’s also very good for um when you do cuttings I didn’t know that you know it’s things that you got to try there’s uh pting mix um sorry seed starting mix different companies so something the I would say you just have to try and see what works best for you and I know I tried this yes last and even when you look for an Amazon I don’t think they sell it in the stores anymore um it was a bag oops I made a mess you guys oh my goodness it was a bag that say c stared mix but it was just cocoa fiber and now when you buy when you look it up in Amazon it just says cocoa fiber and you know for uh to seeds you don’t need fertilizer or food yet right until it germinates and then when you transplant it you can transplant to um to a potty mix that has more more nutrients this is we do just for uh for germination pretty much and I think I need to get more water okay another thing um because I have limited space to start my my seeds I am going to do the so soil blocking but uh the little ones and I’m also going to I have the startic kit I’ll show you in a little bit and I have used that from the beginning if you’re a new garet those are very useful okay I’m going to just let this sit and I’ll bring the the supplies give me one second okay okay let’s see how this is doing okay so let me show you okay so this is another one that I I don’t think I have shown you guys I’ve been using this for the past 3 years now sorry two cuz I started with winter sewing um so this one comes with light so if you have limited space and show you again this will be on my uh Amazon store so this comes so I will be using this for my colos and um my geraniums cuz they have a good germination rate so then you go down and I’ll show you the when this is done okay so that’s one now the other one that you have been probably if you seen on my previous uh seat starting so this one comes I think comes in a pack of five so you got to be careful because there’s one that comes with no lights but you want the one with lights so it’s like this uh you have the tray have the tray this have been rest so there’s the cell tray and then you put this on top and there the light goes connects here that’s another type that you can do if you have limited space now the one that I will be doing today is using this little containers I think this is from forood strap farmer so this one has is the one with holes so you put your uh seats in there have it all nextx you okay and then and then you have the tray for the water right okay but then like that this is the so it’s the little one oops I got this uh from Johnny seeds Okay show you that too but let’s see if the cocoa fiber is ready you guys you know what I think I’m going to dump this over here now I need to get my my vermiculite my water give me one second this is my water H2O to spray the seedlings okay so we’re going to start with the lantas I this is my first time growing [Music] this okay so let’s see the lantas I have the echo pink pick tea and the echo champagne and I already looked up how long it takes to to to grow so it says plant your seeds 16 to 20 two weeks before your last frost so let’s see here it says so and sell packs of present so barely cover needs light and warm to germinate keep at 80ยฐ so I think for this one I’m going to use uh heat mat and germination is 10 to 20 days days I’m going to do one tray and I’m going to divide it in half here maybe let’s see so I use this um so I’m going to write so I’m you I’m going to write uh so we’ll do the champagne on the left side and the pink pigot te on the right side Okay so [Music] so see on and uh the way will be EO pink pink [Music] you know what you guys I think for this part I am going to move and get a little closeup so let me see oh sorry I’m going to put the this Trail right here EO champ oh this is from swow tail you guys I forgot to mention that how it comes so I have 20 seats right so I’m going to do 10 of each okay okay look at that okay so we’ll do 10 there you go oops I got one more here you guys guess 11 so there we go so it says need light and warmth too so I’m not barely covered so the only thing I’m going to cover with is is going to be the make light okay so now let’s do the pink pickle te another 25 pet okay oops think I’m over doing it here sorry you guys [Music] okay so now we’re going to add that vermiculite I heard some people that are struggle growing lantas so we’ll find out with me too right I don’t know we will find out it doesn’t grow I’ll try to grow it again right because it’s it’s it takes time though but we’ll see you guys okay so then next I’m just going to spray with [Music] water sometimes my family grows my water and they start playing with it this is for my plants so also another thing um you got to put that the date when you’re starting your seeds so I forgot that let me write that down but because I’m doing this video I know when I’m when I’m planting right but in your case I’m still going to write it down give me one second so today is January 6 [Music] you guys can you read it you know what I am going to do another tape here put it on top there so that one is ready at the end I’m going to show you when I put the Dome and all that okay for right now I’m just going to put it aside okay we’re going to keep planting more seeds Okay this is another one that takes time to germinate you guys 14 to 30 days this is the Cala maret this is the Rubina we have one two three four four bbas so I think we might do the it’s 20 in here right I’m going to do five of each for this bbina bbina says to grow this one is look at you guys how long it takes for bloom 14 to 16 weeks to bloom but this one says to start 8 to 12 weeks before your last frost and this one has to be kept at 70 to 80ยฐ so all that one thing with verbina cuz I did grow this last year yeah and I I don’t think I call it certified uh but it needs Darkness to germinate so what you do for the soil blocking so this is right so you this is to press down right so just PR it like this sometimes what I notice you have to push it down cuz it doesn’t so this is what I do press this down I know when you look at the videos it’s it’s like just push it and then it’s that no you have to push this down okay I’m going to get [Music] more okay I think this is ready I want to move this okay so now press this over here and then you just press it down see that I should have done this before one so we have one 2 3 4 so on this one we’re going to do the session Cascade in the middle we’re going to do the quse [Music] ble uh the next one will be the mix Flores mix and then the last one will be the vanity want to start with this the Cascade Violet [Music] Twister so I’m going to do five perfect at five 1 2 3 4 this so this is the one I use just to to cover just a little [Music] bit there you go okay the next one is the verbina POR right yeah of course need five that five [Music] one sorry you guys I got two on this one so [Music] hopefully you can see what I’m doing here so there you go push it down push this down and cover it okay so I’ll do the same thing with the other ones okay so this is the forest mix I did grow this last year [Music] last but not least this is the first time I’m growing this verbina bonan sis vanity this is a toer one okay okay and this is smaller you guys look at that might do two per cell [Music] now we’re going to add the [Music] vermicular okay and then water oh what other thing also to remember when you start seeds indoors you have to check your seeds every day cuz depending on how the temperature in your house is you might need to spray with water every day so you cannot let them get dry then the your seeds are not going to grow okay so for this one because it needs um I’m going to have separate because it needs dark to germinate I’m going to use this this over here kind of fits you guys but and so this one doesn’t have the light so this is going to and this is going to be closed so see this is the vents to open the venes like this but I’m going to have it closed right this like this maybe you know what I think I don’t need this bottom because it’s not closing so just going to have this there you go so I’m I put this in the dark okay I’m not going to show you cuz you already saw that so I’m going to just show you at the end uh the final product let’s do this first and then then I got toate so so because it’s going to be one two three four the date is January 6 so this is how it’s going to be so on the left will be the blue color M blue color then we have the we [Music] have and then balloon FL balloon okay okay let’s do the C the K this is the C NEPA and this is um perennial now it says PR soil do not cover in like the E germination again this is from swallow taals oh look at the seats are so tiny how many I have left on this one okay oo this is so tiny look at that so I’m going to do my best [Music] still have some left one more year I guess or I can just thr it in the scen right we’ll see again this one takes 14 to 30 days to to germinate so this one I’m just going to cover with uh vermiculite okay next one is the you lipus silver dollar I did grow this last year you want to see my video from last year I’m going to go again do want to have more I just need five okay so there are the seeds [Music] okay you guys so this one says so we just want to cover with vericite I’m going to add a little more because really see maybe I’ll do [Music] two and the germination also is between 14 to 21 days next is the so the this is I have not grown this so it says press into so but do not cover so most of this ones just need like to germinate just be not covering with anything just want to cover with pericet so this one is also a palette o too many too many I just need five [Music] I got [Music] five okay the balloon flower this one too just needs light to germinate we just need [Music] five so it looks like you guys so that I [Music] do now we’ll do the verite [Music] water okay you guys so this Salvia is salvia Faria so this one I do one maybe 10 of this and 10 of this and this one I takes uh 10 to 12 weeks uh before you last frost and this one is also Salvia but this one is coocha salvia kosa and this ones you can grow six weeks before you last brush so I might wait on this to do probably in February so we’re just going to do this obvious and I’m going to do 10 of each okay okay so let’s do I’m going to do so just going to put the date over here one six and so the blue blue this blue Victory and this other one is fairy queen look at this beautiful so this one grows 1.15 ft High by 1 ft wide so we want to cover it a little bit cuz this is 116 inch depth it requires light okay there we have it so Victory is on this side and that one is over here okay let’s do the fairy queen and this is the first time I’m growing salvas you guys CU they rub it in the resistance that’s what I want to I can put around my border uh how many SE do I have here it looks like a lot it’s one gram okay so I need 10 right okay let’s see let me show you okay what I I have one more here this is done this one is the blue pictory oh sorry you guys so this just to cover a little bit so I’m going to do [Music] this next one this looks very flat [Music] H per make [Music] light I have some perennials you guys so we’re going to do the blue glitter then I have the helot Trope again that you I’m going to wait till the end then I have this other perennial Rock Crest purple you know what you guys I’m going to do the Coral Bells with this and then you guys so I know I said I was going to start this in Fe I’m going to start now although it says six weeks before your last Fross but we’re just going to start earlier okay cuz I don’t have a cuz so I want to do four four of each this four of each this Salia four of the blue glitter and sorry five and the helot Trope and then so I’m going to do coral bells five five five and five so oh so let’s Okay so we’re going to start with this can do [Music] the so I have one two three four so the helot trope we go you guys I grew this last year and I forgot to I had it in a container and I forgot to transplant it to the ground so bummer [Music] Salia helot trope [Music] oh sorry look at that very tiny [Music] okay so what does it say cover it a little bit and the helot trop starts uh you want to start your seeds 8 to 12 weeks before you last [Music] fro okay next one is the glitter from Johnny seeds this one look at that takes 10 to 16 weeks you guys look at the seeds okay [Music] that’s a long time isn’t it 10 to 16 weeks okay cover it next up the obvious [Music] next is the pink [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]

  1. Hi Nancy, thank you for this video, now I understand cold stratification. I also learned itโ€™s important to actually read the back of the seed packet!

  2. Great video. My greatest take away from today was using the soil blocker using coir!!! I use the blocker but with a type of traditional soil blocking mix (compost, or worm castings, or greensand added). Really excited to try blocking plain potting mix! Thanks for sharing. You mentioned larkspur but I didn't see you germinate it. Share your method please.
