Today I am at the Suihoen Japanese Garden in Vanise. I have wanted to come here for a long time, but they are normally not open on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and I work during the week, but today they’re having a special event and they are open on Sunday. So, I’m so excited to go in. Let’s check it out. I’m going to put directions on how to get here in the description because Google did not do right by me this time. They sent me to more than one dead end, which if the gate had not been closed, I could have gotten over here, but it wasn’t the way you want to get over here. So, I’ll leave those directions in the description below. They do have a free parking lot. So, it’s free to enter and a free parking lot. That’s a deal. This is not just a Japanese garden. It is a water reclamation plant. Because this is a special event, they have these booths set up that talk about LA County water reclamation and sanitation. And then the actual reclamation plant is right over here. All right, let’s head in. Look how beautiful this is. I believe that this was used as the uh set or the inspiration for Starfleet Academy, but it’s beautiful. This is really funny. They have a picture of Starfleet Academy from Star Trek the Next Generation, and they’ve got the Golden Gate Bridge behind it. Yeah, this is not in San Francisco. This is the dry garden. This is the only place in the garden with an information board. It is full of symbolism. The garden, not the information board. The grass mound called Kareansui represents Turtle Island, a symbol of longevity. The upright stones symbolize Hurayan, the island of immortals and everlasting happiness. There’s a path that leads to a Wisteria arbor, but it’s currently closed. Here’s a familiar face. This is a Canada goose. I have seen several of them around here already. From here you get a great view of how large this space is. This is cool. It’s a lily pad pond. At the opposite end of the lily pad pond are these gorgeous irises with a bumblebee buzzing around and a malard duck. He knows a good thing when he sees it. And what is a Japanese garden without a bamboo forest? This is beautiful. The tea house is open. Let’s go in and check it out. This is actually where they’re having the special event. It’s how to take care of bonsai plants. In this corner, they have an authentic tea house. You can’t go in there, but you can look in and see it. I wish they had more markers to define what it was that you’re looking at. This looks like it could be a place of some significance, but there is nothing here to really tell me. This table is just absolutely gorgeous, though. Reclaimed wood fits right in with the reclaimed water theme and the recycling. Very cool. Check out this waterfall. It comes tumbling down into this uh creek which runs under this bridge and continues on down to some of the more peaceful ponds below. There is a whole plethora of fish right here. I don’t know if you can see them, but the water is clear enough that you can see down and see all of these fish just hanging out and having a good time. They have a boat over here. I don’t think they let you go boating, but boy, I would sure love to. This would be a great place to get out and paddle around. I think that’s a snowy crane that just landed on the boat. That is so cool to see here. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen ducks that look like this before. I don’t know what kind of ducks they are, but they are really pretty. These are not actually ducks, but Egyptian geese, and they’re not native to the US. All Egyptian geese that you see in the wild in the US escaped captivity from zoos or aviaries. So this is very cool to [Music] see. And what is a trip to a garden without some troublemakers? So, I am on the reclamation plant side of the lake and they have this amazing lookout right over the lake where you can see everything. This is so cool. They have a viewing tower above us. Let’s head on up there. This is the plant viewing tower. On this side, you see the garden and all their plants. But that’s not what this uh tower is about. It is about the reclamation plant. On this side, you can actually see the reclamation plant operating. Opposite from the plant viewing tower is this other outlook where you can view the entire garden from here. So this is just a stunning view. The Swoen Gardens have exceeded my expectations. This place is stunning. It is open Monday through Thursdays. It’s free to come and visit. Please stop by. This place is amazing. Find your adventure. Thank you for watching.

  1. The Arboretum, Descanso Gardens and the Huntington are all places near me but are always crowded so I'm very glad that I stumbled upon your channel (was watching documentaries on Geisha arts because I miss Japan) and will include this place as an alternative escape from the city life and noise. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  2. I was going because it’s so pretty but now even more excited because you were very informative 🤗🤗

  3. I agree Jasmine, I would love to have gotten into that boat and floated around. It’s a serene and beautiful place, I am surprised there weren’t more people walking around, but if I were visiting I would be happy about that. I love seeing the antics of the various kinds of birds.

Wondering, is food allowed? If one wants to stop and sit on a bench and have a sandwich or a snack, is that permitted?

  4. Fantastic. Tried several times in the past to go thee and they would not allow filming so we passed. A wonderful thing that they have built so beautiful and nice to see. Really enjoyed your video.
