After reading Doug Tallamy’s books, I committed to replacing non-natives and adding keystone plants to my home landscaping. My wife begrudgingly agreed to remove a Japanese cherry tree, a non-native magnolia, a Hinoki cypress and a deutzia but she wants the lilac and hydrangeas to stay. She did go with me to two native plant sales this fall and is starting to buy into my plans for less lawn and more native habitat.
I’m in SW Ohio, Zone 6b, suburban heavy clay soil. These are all in my south facing, full sun front yard.
Fall 2025 additions include: Bur Oak, Swamp White Oak, Penstemon and Cardinal Flower, Res Twig Dogwood, Rose Milkweed, Flat-Topped Aster, Cut-Leaf Coneflower, Ironweed, Blue False Indigo, Butterfly Milkweed, New Jersey Tea, and Buttonbush
