EUGENE, Ore. – As autumn sets in, gardening enthusiasts are gearing up for the season’s unique opportunities. Caleb Johnson from Johnson Brothers Garden Market shares insights on maximizing fall gardening efforts.
“Fall is the number one time to plant,” Johnson said. He emphasized the importance of planting trees and shrubs now, allowing them to root before spring and summer.
Johnson also advised gardeners to focus on perennials, avoiding annuals and vegetables.
“Do a good clean up in the fall of veggie and annual beds,” he said, recommending the removal of accumulated leaves and debris.
Pruning is another key task for fall, Johnson said, in order to promote and maintain healthy plants.
“Prune out any dead or diseased branches on trees and shrubs,” Johnson said, highlighting the importance of maintaining plant health.
Johnson reminded gardeners not to neglect watering, even with occasional fall rain.
“Don’t just turn off the water completely,” he said, stressing the need to monitor moisture levels.
Fall is also ideal for bulb planting, with fall planting ideal timing for colorful springtime blooms.
“Get those tulips and daffodils in the ground,” Johnson encouraged, suggesting this as a perfect time for colorful spring blooms.
For perennials, Johnson offered specific advice.
“If they’re perennials that you want to divide, you should definitely cut those back, dig them up and divide them,” he said. However, for perennials not being divided, Johnson recommended leaving them as they provide food sources for wildlife in winter.
As fall unfolds, these gardening tips ensure a thriving garden come spring.
