Connecticut will experience its first frost of the season tonight, do you think that the growing and bug season is over? In some ways it’s not.
One thing is for sure, the growing season will be officially over in most of Connecticut as of 12 hours from right now, the first frost of the Fall/Winter 2025-2026 season is underway at this moment. By the time we wake up in the Northern half of the state, the temperatures will be hovering right around 30 degrees. It’s not a ‘killing’ frost yet, but with the wild temperature swing we experienced in the last 48 hours, and a big nor’easter in the forecast for this weekend, it might happen sooner than later.

Here are the plants and veggies that you should bring in, or cover tonight: beans, cukes, peppers, squash, tomatoes, geraniums, begonias, any tropical plant, and hydrangeas. Your broccoli, carrots, onions, and beets will be fine, so will your hardy perennials and woody plants.
These are the Bugs that Will Meet Their Maker Tonight in Connecticut
While the first frost doesn’t necessarily mean that every insect in Connecticut will die off or go dormant, tonight is the beginning of the end for most. The adults of most will pass with the first hard freeze, but eggs? They survive to annoy you next Summer. The good news is the mosquitos and spotted lanternfly threats are gone. Unfortunately, the first frost will set off the ‘survive’ alarm in bugs, and they will seek shelter inside with us.
Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll see a freak 75 degree day or two in the next month, it’s Connecticut.
