Gardening for the first time? Here are four tips to get started. Take a tour of your yard. Notice existing plants, paths, and structures, and think about what your goals are for your landscape. Do you want more shade? Then you should plant a shade tree. If you want more privacy, you can create a year round privacy screen with evergreen trees. If you want to grow your own food, consider planting fruit trees. Measure your yard, draw a map, and use bubbles to create a rough layout. Note how much light different areas get, hills, structures, and areas where water accumulates. Also, make a note if you see deer or rabbits in your area. Now, it’s time to decide where you want to plant. We are going to start by adding a garden bed along this fence line. Don’t feel like you need to solve for your whole landscape at once. Breaking it down into smaller projects can make it more manageable. Check property lines, HOA rules, and locate underground utilities. It’s always best to call before you dig. Now that you understand your space, watch part two for tips on finding inspiration.
