I have been propagating this trimming for about a month now. It had begun to sprout some roots a week back and then I checked on it today it was black and the sprouts had fallen off or disappeared. I honestly don’t know what type of plant it is and I’ve been using moist paper towel (new one every week). Not sure what happened to cause this or what I can do differently anything helps.

It kinda look like an Lace Aloe leaf to me, I don’t think that plant can be propagate by leaf.
Do you have pictures of the roots?
You made compost. This does not propagate this way. Just rotting. If it somehow had enough material at the bottom there to grow a root, it would probably never do more than just that.
