One in eight women in the US will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Chances are, each of us knows someone who has been affected by this disease. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., an estimated 316,950 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2025, along with 59,080 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
This October, the Palmetto Garden Club of Mount Pleasant, with its 50 female members, is proud to launch its second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. Our mission is to raise awareness about the importance of annual screenings, self-examinations and early detection, which are critical tools in the fight against breast cancer.
Early detection saves lives. When breast cancer is found in its earliest localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate is 99 percent. Thanks to advances in early detection and treatment, there are now over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
Community Beautification and Outreach Efforts
As part of our campaign, we’ve partnered once again with the Wando Library to enhance their gardens and planters. Throughout the month of October:
• Pink flowers have been planted in front of the Library and in the Reading Garden to serve as a visible reminder of breast cancer awareness.
• Pink ribbons and informational literature will be available to all patrons.
In addition to this, we have expanded our outreach to women’s health and imaging centers across the Charleston area, including:
• East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO)
• Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)
• Imaging Specialists of Charleston
• Novant Health/East Cooper Medical Center
These locations received breast cancer awareness educational materials, pink ribbons and pink-inspired dish gardens lovingly prepared by our members to serve as a reminder to patients about Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
