Monty Don was rushed to hospital last Friday and remained there for treatment over the weekend, leading him to apologise for the cancellation of dates on his tour.

The BBC Gardeners’ World presenter was kept in hospital for several days and was unable to appear at six scheduled events in Exeter, Truro, Bath and Nottingham at the last minute.

In a video posted on Instagram on Tuesday, Don, 69, said: “Hello. I am so sorry to have disappointed all those people who were going to come and see me in Exeter and Truro and Bath and Nottingham. But on Friday afternoon I was rushed to A&E. I was kept in the hospital over Saturday, Sunday, and Monday and had to have drips and all the rest of it.”

He did not disclose any specific details about the illness that caused him to require emergency treatment but reassured his fans that his recovery was going well.

Don said: “I came home last night, and I’m feeling much better. I’m going to spend the next few days quietly recuperating here at home and hopefully by the weekend I’ll be back to full fitness.”

The television presenter has had several health scares in the past and required an emergency surgery due to an abdominal infection in 2007. One year later, he suffered a minor stroke at home, which he attributed to exhaustion from travelling to film Around the World in 80 Gardens.

Don is on tour with his show An Audience with Monty Don, which began on November 1 and is set to conclude on December 2 after 24 scheduled shows.

The event, billed as the “ultimate Monty Don experience”, is described on the website as: “With something for seasoned gardeners and green-fingered novices alike, don’t miss the opportunity to join Monty for a timely and thought-provoking celebration of the ever-surprising and comforting presence of nature.”
