October is one of the best months to get your garden in shape for the cooler season. With warm days and cool nights, it’s the perfect time to plant cool-season crops that thrive in these conditions. In this video, we’ll cover a wide variety of vegetables, flowers, herbs, and even companion plants to maximize your garden’s potential this fall.
Vegetables:
Start with brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale—great choices for succession planting to ensure a continuous harvest throughout the fall. I’ll show you how to plant these so your garden stays productive. This is also a great month to plant greens like lettuce, arugula, spinach, and collard greens. Want to grow root vegetables? October is ideal for carrots, beets, turnips, and radishes—I’ll share some tricks for germinating those tricky carrot seeds using burlap to ensure a better yield. Learn how to plant celery from transplants or cut-off ends.
Garlic and Onions:
If you’ve ever wanted to grow garlic, now’s the time. I’ll guide you step-by-step on how to plant garlic, soaking the cloves in a mixture of fish and kelp fertilizer with baking soda to ensure they get a strong start. You’ll also learn how to plant onions from seed or transplants to avoid bolting and get bigger bulbs. I’ll explain how to space them properly and the benefits of planting onions in a raised bed or green stalk.
Herbs:
October is perfect for perennial herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, and mint, as well as annual herbs like parsley, cilantro, dill, and borage. Plant these now to enjoy fresh herbs through the winter and beyond. For saffron lovers, I’ll show you how to plant saffron crocus bulbs and tips on harvesting this valuable spice.
Flowers:
Add a splash of color to your garden this fall with flowers! October is the time to plant poppies, calendula, sweet peas, and nasturtiums directly from seed. I’ll also show you the easiest fall flowers to grow from transplants like snapdragons, geraniums, and blue salvia—perfect for a beautiful garden that blooms until next spring. You can also plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and ranunculus for stunning blooms in the spring.
Companion Plants:
For those who want to attract beneficial insects and pollinators, I’ll cover the top companion plants you should add to your garden in October, such as dill, parsley, and borage. These plants not only look great but also improve the health of your garden by attracting beneficial insects.

October’s warm days and cool nights are perfect for planting just about anything cool season transplants and seeds will establish quickly in the warm soil and get a good start before temperatures come down look at everything you can plant this month and this isn’t even everything I’m Angela from growing in the garden my Garden’s in Mesa Arizona I want to help you succeed even if you’re gardening in tough conditions you spent last month getting your garden bed ready and now it’s time to plant and have some fun October is the best month to plant all of the brasas but you don’t want to plant them all at once or you’re going to have Harvest all at once so what I like to do is pick up a couple transplants at the local nursery and also start seeds indoors every couple of weeks at the beginning of the season I have the nursery seedlings that are ready to plant right now and then I can plant these that I started indoors in a couple of weeks and then a couple weeks after that I’ll plant these that I just started mustard greens cabbage cauliflower kale add them all you can plant all of these from seeds or transplants if you’re planting from transplant here’s a few tips when you’re at the nursery look for young tight transplants they will do best in your garden and then handle them carefully they can grow new roots and new leaves but if that stem breaks they can’t grow a new stem before you plant look at the spacing guidelines and give them enough room and when you plant dig a hole if the stem’s a little bit wobbly you can bury that stem just a little bit I’m going to plant this kale one per square and put it right in that hole these broccoli are a little bit wobbly you got to be super careful so I’m going to go ahead and bury that bottom part of the stem just being really careful with that stem but firming the soil around the plant to give it a little bit of extra support I wouldn’t take off any leaves because that’s what’s giving energy to to the plant I like to plant brassas every other square and then come in after and interplant some quick growing crops like radishes in between so when these get big those other crops have finished up I got the first round planted I’ll put these back inside until it’s their turn in a couple of weeks this is the month to plant all of the greens charred lettuce spinach arugula I like to use seeds but you can also use transplants you can find all the information and More in my planting calendars they’re available on my website this month you can plant artichokes from seed or transplant and potatoes celery seeds take forever to germinate I started these inside a long time ago if you want to plant celery look for transplants or you can use the cut off end of a grocery store Bunch let’s plant the ends first you want to dig down and bury them in the soil so they’re covered with an inch or two of soil plant three per square or you can do four seems like four gets a little bit crowded so get that in there nice and deep so you have a couple inches of soil over that root before long you’ll see Sprouts appear from each of those bases if you’re planting from transplant dig it in and plant it right at the level of the soil I already amended this soil with compost and worm castings celery likes lots of food and lots of water group crops love October and they all do best started from seeds directly in the garden turnips rudaba radish beets parsnips and carrots people say that radishes are one of the easiest crops to grow but sometimes they don’t bulb up here’s why radishes like plenty of room thin extra seedlings so that they know they have room to grow give them plenty of sunlight and lots of water and then they’ll be ready to harvest in no time if you follow the square foot spacing on my guide you may not have to come back in and thin try to plant carefully and it’ll save you work later carrot seeds are tiny and notoriously tricky to germinate here’s what to do when you’re planting from seed it’s tough to plant just one carrot seed instead I like to use pelleted carrot seeds they’re larger and it’s easy to plant the right amount carefully Plant 16 per square that gives the carrots plenty of room to grow then top with a light layer of soil now what about germination carrot seeds could take up to 2 weeks to emerge and they have to stay hydrated that whole time I like to put a layer of burlap over those carrot seeds it traps in the moisture and it reminds me where I need to put a little bit of extra water keep an eye on that burlap when the seedlings emerge it’s time to pull it off and let your carrots grow let’s plant garlic this is the best time to do it if you live in a warm climate soft necks are the best type to plant don’t break the bulbs apart until it’s time to plant when you’re ready push down on the garlic and break it apart leave the papers on I like to soak my garlic for 8 hours in a solution of baking soda and fish and kelp fertilizer the baking soda has antibacterial benefits and the fertilizer stimulates growth now these are ready to plant plant with a flat side facing down and the pointy side facing up plant garlic 2 to 3 in deep deep and 4 to 6 in apart I plant nine garlic per square ready to go choose your largest cloves for planting they’ll give you the biggest [Music] buls you should see shoots emerge within a couple of weeks but garlic is a long seasoned crop and you’re not going to harvest it until next spring I’m experimenting this year and planting garlic in a green stock someone in my Online Academy grew it this way last year and had great success so I’m excited to give it a try I’ll plant one garlic in each pocket so they’ll have their own space and plenty of room and the nice thing about this is because all the Garlic’s growing together it’ll be easy to adjust the watering when I need to slow it down at the end of the season or if I don’t want it to get quite as much sunlight when it gets hot or move it to an area that gets more sunlight as the days get shorter it doesn’t take up much room but it’s amazing how much soil is in each one of these Pockets when it’s time to water I fill up the top and then the water goes down and Waters all of the pockets I’m excited to see how this does this is the beginning of the onion planting window if you’re tired of onions bolting plant from seed or transplant don’t use onion sets those little dried up onions that you see bags of at the nursery they’re much more likely to bolt to plant onions you’ll want to separate out the onions and pull apart the individual onions give onions plenty of room the more room they have the bigger they’ll be bury the tops just about an inch deep deep if you bury them too deep they may not bulb up onions are a long seasoned crop they’ll put on lots of stocks and green growth and then the bulbs will start forming in the spring this year I’m planting some onions in the green stock I’ll give each onion its own pocket so it has plenty of room and we’ll see how they do the nice thing is I’ll be able to stop watering as they near Harvest Time and move this if we get a freeze I’ve never gardened with green stocks before and I’ve seen people have a lot of success ites doesn’t take up much room so it’s a great option for people with limited space I imagine it would be harder to grow in these during the summer but during the cooler months I think these might be a good option plant ET toy onions this month they’re one of my favorite companion plants and I love tucking them around the garden plant them about an inch deep you can plant four per square I love growing these with strawberries I also really like planting them among brassicas they’re so easy to tuck in and among your garden anywhere there’s not a bad place to plant these onions you can also plant shallots this month I’ve had limited success with shallot sets so I started them from seed this year and I can’t wait to see how they do planting shallots is similar to onions you’ll separate these roots and then use a little bit closer spacing than you would use with onions I’m going to plant nine per square shallots or anything in the onion family EX excellent companion plant and I like tucking them all around the garden you can also plant leaks and green onions this month from seed or transplant plant peas and fava beans always plant from seed right in the garden you can also grow garbanzo beans and lentils this month if you don’t want to buy transplants or start seeds indoors here are the top 10 vegetables that you can plant directly from seeds right in your garden Swiss chard arugula beets kale turnips radish spinach peas lettuce and carrots October is the best time to plant many of our favorite perennial fruits things like blackberries grapes strawberries Goji berries and passion fruit October is the perfect time to plant any of the perennial herb things like thyme Rosemary or oregano garlic chives all of those herbs love getting their Roots established in the warm soil and they have plenty of time to grow well before it gets hot it’s also the best time to plant our favorite cool season herbs things like borage fennel cilantro parsley dill and chamomile this is the world’s most expensive spice I’ll show you how to grow it saffron is a type of crocus planted from bulbs in the fall plant 3 in deep and 3 in apart I’m going to fill this container with saffron plant with a root side facing down and this hairy part [Music] up have an OA here in the middle it’s going to help with moisture saffron grows really fast you’re going to see Sprouts emerge followed by purple flowers and then you’ll see the red threads which is the saffron spice when I’m planting my main crops in my beds I always leave a couple of empty spots those are for companion plants to invite beneficial insects and pollinators into my garden here are 10 companion plants you can add from seed right now alysum bachelor’s button borage kandula chamomile cilantro Dill parsley neram and violas the list of flowers to plant in October is overwhelming but pick a couple and add them to your garden even if you’re just a vegetable Gardener you will love all of the added benefits and beauty that flowers bring to your garden if you’d like to add flowers to your garden but don’t want to buy transplants here are 10 flowers that you can plant from seed directly in your garden right now poppy alysum Hol Hawk Larkspur nestum sweet peas Cula bachelor’s button straw flow and violas if you’d like to add flowers but don’t want to mess with seeds here are transplants that are available at most big box stores plant them now and you’ll have blooms through April or May snapdragons Blue Salvia geranium patunas gazania alysum dianthus stock violets and lobilia want beautiful wild flowers next spring this is the time to plant look for regional mixes to make it easy here’s how to do it break and loosen the soil or rocks wherever you’re going to plant to about an inch sprinkle the seeds over the soil the package will tell you how big of an area to plant and then top with a little bit of soil or sand you can wait for the winter rains to help germinate them or you can make it happen on your own begin watering and keep them hydrated until seedlings emerge you’ll have a beautiful spring October is the beginning of the planting wind for flowers that grow from bulbs or corns like daffodil verulus and anemone I’m planting a variety in this container so that I can have blooms over an extended time remember plant bulbs two or three times their depth and plant with a root side down I’ll plant daffodils around the inside of this container unfortunately many bulbs don’t naturalize here so they’re treated as annuals and we plant every year for ronculus and Anem you want to soak the corns first soak them for about 3 hours and they’ll get nice and plump plant ranunculus about 2 or 3 in deep and about 3 in apart now I’ll plant anemones between those two so anemones are a couple of inches deep and it’s not always easy to tell which way is up so I usually just stick them in and it all works out in the spring this container will be beautiful with the anemon daffodil and ranunculus blooms and finally it’s time to plant cool season hearty annuals these are the flowers that can withstand the cold and if you plant them now you’re going to have long stems and beautiful blooms in the spring if you started seeds indoors it’s time to harden them off and get planting if you’d like to start seeds indoors this month here are the vegetables and herbs to plant and here’s all the flowers you can start indoors in October for in-depth planting guides and lists of what to plant head to growing in the garden.
