The plein air art event, led by Jackson’s, “transformed Somerset’s historical garden estate into an open studio”, a Hestercombe spokesperson said.

Throughout the day artists set up their easels within the landscape to create original artworks inspired by the surroundings.

These works drew inspiration from three centuries of garden design featuring Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian elements by Bampfylde, Lutyens, and Jekyll.

Organiser Lisa Takahashi said: “This dramatic landscape is a perfect open-air studio for capturing history, architecture, and horticulture,

“From the dramatic Great Cascade to the sunken Great Plat, Hestercombe Gardens boasts many striking views. Capture sweeping valley scenes, mirrored ponds, geometric borders, and floral terraces, shaped by centuries of design and evolving light.”

This was the eighth plein air event organised by art material enthusiasts, Jackson’s, following the “success of previous plein air events”.

According to the organisers, the events foster an “inclusive and supportive environment where local and visiting artists can connect and collaborate, whilst capturing the beauty of some of the UK’s most picturesque locations”.

Lisa Takahashi, event organiser from Jackson’s said: “Our plein air events are as much about community and wellbeing as they are about capturing landscapes and making art.

“They offer a chance to slow down, connect with nature, be present in the moment, and meet like-minded people.”

“There’s something truly special about painting in the open air. The natural light, shifting landscapes, and fresh air not only inspire creativity but also promote mindfulness and wellbeing.

“Our plein air events shine a light on the stunning landscapes that the UK has to offer.”

Hestercombe Garden staff said: “It was an absolute pleasure to partner with Jackson’s and welcome expert artist and tutor for the day, Lisa Takahashi along with more than 70 talented artists for Plein Air Day.

“The wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits or creativity of those involved and it was a real honour for Hestercombe Gardens to host the event which continues our fine tradition of “art and landscape” across the estate.

“We very much look forward to the next time.”

Rose Middleton, a painter and attendee from the day said: “Big thank you to Jackson’s plein air team and Lisa. I really enjoyed the day.

“As a non-singer/dancer/musician, it was as close as I could get to being part of a flash mob. Loved it.

“Everywhere is a long way from Cornwall, but I hope to get to any future such days in the South West.”

The success of this event comes after Hestercombe went into administration on August 1 and has not confirmed whether winter events will be taking place this year.

A spokesperson for Forvis Mazars said: “Hestercombe Gardens continues to welcome visitors and is trading on a business as usual basis.

“We are working towards a long-term solution to exit the administration and secure Hestercombe’s long-term survival as a popular visitor attraction, events venue and important heritage asset.

“We are working with our suppliers to investigate the viability of seasonal events and future private bookings and will provide updates when it is possible to do so.”
