I have this japanese maple (Acer Shirasawa Moonrise) that is growing very fast, and I feel like I should trim it down to become more dense and contained. It is starting to spread out and take up too much space, with long shooters out to the sides. What would be the best way to trim this to make it look better? Any input is appreciated!

You have a pretty tree that will grow to be a lovely 15’ tall x 10’ wide shape in time. If that’s not what you want, now is the time of year to very carefully transplant it to somewhere it will be happy before it gets too large and replace it with a smaller tree. The worst thing you can do to a graceful tree is to try to repeatedly butcher it into a stubby misshapen battle scarred dwarf that will haunt you for the next decade or two.
