The Pet Shard Nutty is a piece of gear that was added to Grow a Garden on October 4, 2025, as part of the Chubby Chipmunk update. This handy item is a neat way to give a pet a specific mutation, especially if it’s not one you can get from the Pet Mutations Machine. How to Get the Pet Shard Nutty in Grow a Garden
Getting the Pet Shard Nutty gear item requires participating in the Chubby Chipmunk event. Unfortunately, it has an extremely low chance of appearing as a reward, which makes it very rare. Unlike the reliable rewards you can get from increasing the weight of your Chubby Chipmunk, this is a random reward.
Every time your Chubby Chipmunk pet eats a fruit from your garden, an acorn will spawn on the island. It often appears within the area between the stalls, rather than on the edges, from what we’ve noticed. However, you’ll have a limited time of about a minute or so before it disappears.
If you’re not sure when to look for acorns in Grow a Garden, you’ll need to wait for your Chubby Chipmunk to eat a fruit. When they do, a message will appear at the top of your screen saying they did. And then another message will appear saying an acorn has spawned somewhere on the island.
Collecting an acorn will give you a reward from a large pool of items such as Watering Cans, Reclaimers, Nutty Chests, and of course, the Pet Shard Nutty. However, the chance of getting a Pet Shard Nutty from an acorn is only .24%.
What Does the Pet Shard Nutty Do?
The Pet Shard Nutty applies the Nutty pet mutation to any pet you use it on. This will override a mutation if your pet already has one. The benefit of this item is that you don’t have to get your pet to age 50 to use the Pet Mutations machine, where you have a chance to get any mutation.
The Nutty pet mutation is an odd one compared to others, which is why we recommend not rushing into using it on a pet. This pet mutation makes it so every 20 minutes, your pet’s next ability has a 20% chance to activate twice. Which sounds great on its own. However, when it fails to activate that 20% chance, your pet will lose a level instead.
How to Use a Pet Shard Nutty
Locate it in your backpack or on the hotbar at the bottom of the screen, then click or tap on a pet you want to use it on. Make sure you’re ready to use it and have your pet already in your garden. The last thing you want to do is use this gear item on the wrong pet since it’s a tough one to get.
