So my auntie, who loves landscaping and planting trees and shrubs etc, wanted some black top soil added to her front flower bed. The thing is she wanted all 4 yards put in here and to build it up so that the snow melt wouldn’t come into her basement. She wanted it built up so much and she even said “ I want it to be at least a foot higher on my siding”.
Right then and there I should have said something, but she had way more experience than me so I just used my tractor and brought her the dirt. She has it sloped away from the house atleast but man, black soil is like a sponge is it not? And will it not make her house more susceptible to rot? And also attract more moisture to her basement? I told her my concerns yesterday but I haven’t heard back. Any advice from you pros would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I would have put the effort and money into mulch instead.
Put in drainage
I’d tear out all those plants and put in like 30 hydrangeas to cover all that mess and give some structure.
It looks like the dirt is on the siding now. Isn’t that bad?
Piling that soil against the siding is 100% going to rot out the side of her house. This needs to be remediated ASAP.
That will absolutely rot the house and allow easy termite access. Dig that away to a several inches below the siding.
