Whenever you need to give someone directions going most anywhere down North Morrison Boulevard that passes Bill Hood Ford you always start by saying, “You know where the Bill Hood dealership is with that huge American flag?”

It’s just the longtime standard that most people living here know where to go from that point. And as we approached the dealership Saturday, it was softly flying, mostly unfurled and absolutely beautiful against a sky of blue with puffy white clouds and the huge strong Ford sign right beneath it. A beautiful sight to see!

And what was beneath that gorgeous scene were not only lots of Ford cars and trucks. All across the edging of the sidewalk was first a manicured lawn, and past that were the lovely gardens of pink, red and white vinca (or periwinkle as I always knew them) surrounded by low edging cedar with great arms, with mounded sunshine ligustrum and circles of spiky striped lilies.

Because of these features, Bill Hood Ford won Hammond Garden Club’s Link Award for the month of October.

The Link Award is given to businesses that are somewhat landscaped, either by gardens such as these or potted plants that show off some artistry that beautifies the business with flowers and/or greenery.

Inside the building foyer was a wreath of white roses in memory of the recent death of the company’s owner, a man beloved by many family members and friends and who was known for treating employees and customers like family. I’m sure he would have been so very proud of receiving this award. Sorry, Bill, we only missed that by a couple weeks.

When you ride by, even though it’s hard to look past that waving “Old Glory,” look down to see the wonderful gardens surrounding a business that began in 1970 and grew from a single dealership in Amite into Hood Automotive Group, a network of over 11 locations across the region.

If you are the owner of a business in Hammond and would like to be considered for the Link Award, visit our website at www.hammond gardenclub.weebly.com or call me, Linda Broussard, at 985-351-9903.

God bless the beautifully landscaped businesses in Hammond, America!
