BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) – The Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, or CHOW, received 67 pounds of harvested vegetables from the Broome County Correctional Facility Garden last week.
CHOW has received donations from the Correctional Facility’s garden throughout the year, and director Les Aylesworth said the produce helps provide the community with fresh food.
“This is like freshly harvested, freshly picked stuff that is just high-quality good stuff, so as far as our program goes, that’s the kind of stuff we don’t get a lot of, and it’s just a blessing every time we do,” said Aylesworth.
Aylesworth went on to say that health concerns like obesity are actually a sign of food insecurity due to a lack of fresh fruits and vegetables. With help from the Correctional Facility’s Garden, CHOW hopes to break down barriers to health and well-being.
“Fresh foods can usually be more expensive than processed foods and so having those options for folks who are living paycheck to paycheck or maybe not even you’re not even able to bridge that gap and so having this fresh food is just a great benefit,” said Aylesworth.
CHOW is anticipating even more donations from the garden as the growing season starts to wind down.
