Fairly affluent area of town I frequent for work recently put in a new sidewalk. It resulted in at least 30 mature trees having their exposed roots, and as seen in the first picture, actual trunk…Shaved off to make room.
Are they doomed now? Should I be careful when walking under them?
The sub has been so informative. I just don’t see how any City official signed off on this??
Or was it more a “better the trees die than being sued for an injury caused by a root upheaved sidewalk…”
TIA!

Time will tell. Some may suffer or develop root rot. Some may look rather unharmed
Some will absolutely die. Some will be stressed and have some dieback. Some may not really be affected at all. It will take 2-5 years for the damage to become evident though
ugh that is horrible
Not much you can do. The lawyers are lined up to sue the city if somebody trips over a uneven sidewalk.
The sidewalk or the tree?
My local city works around roots instead of cutting them. This could have been a nice meandering path the went around the roots (and would have looked better, too).
