As autumn sets in, gardening experts are encouraging homeowners to take proactive steps to protect their lawns and keep weeds at bay, and one simple tool could make a big difference.

Experts at Yell have highlighted the benefits of using lime in the garden this season, explaining how it can help manage soil pH and support healthier grass growth. Simon Akeroyd, Head of Estates and Landscapes at Painshill Park Trust, revealed that applying lime can make soil less acidic, creating an environment where grass thrives and weeds struggle.

“Applying lime evenly at around 50 grams per square metre during the winter months helps balance soil pH,” Akeroyd said.

“Weeds prefer acidic soil, so by neutralising it, you make it less hospitable for them while giving your grass the upper hand.”

But lime is just one part of an effective autumn lawn care routine. Akeroyd stressed the importance of regular lawn maintenance, particularly soil aeration.

“One of the most effective ways to improve the quality of the lawn in autumn is to aerate it,” he said. Aeration involves creating small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach grass roots.

“Aeration helps relieve compaction, increases drainage, which reduces moss problems, and promotes healthier root systems. You can even brush top dressing into the holes to further improve soil quality. This encourages stronger grass growth, making it harder for weeds to take hold.”

Akeroyd also recommended avoiding cutting lawns too short. Lawns mown at a height of 3.5 to 4 inches maintain stronger grass that can better compete with weeds, while also looking just as attractive as lawns cut shorter.

Scarifying, the process of raking to remove dead and decaying material at the base of grass blades, is another key step.

“Thatch can smother grass, impede moisture reaching the roots, retain excess water, and encourage fungal diseases,” Akeroyd said.

“Using a spring-tined rake to pull across the lawn may look harsh, but it dramatically improves lawn health and resilience against weeds.”

By combining lime application, aeration, scarifying, and proper mowing, gardeners can strengthen their lawns this autumn, giving grass the best chance to outcompete weeds naturally.

With the cooler months approaching, these simple steps can make all the difference in maintaining a lush, healthy lawn and keeping unwanted weeds under control.
