A Llanelli family who are supported by children’s hospice Tŷ Hafan family will officially start this month’s Dark Run event at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Hannah Coles will lead the start of the hospice’s 2.5k sponsored fun run on Saturday, October, 25.

“The Dark Run for Tŷ Hafan at the National Botanic Garden of Wales is a great thing for people to get together and have some fun,” said Hannah, whose nine-year-old son Sebastian, has severe cerebral palsy resulting from a brain injury he suffered when he was a baby.

Sebastian, Hannah, dad Troy and little sister Holly have all started to receive support from Tŷ Hafan in the past few weeks.

Hannah added: ““We got accepted for support by Tŷ Hafan at Easter and instantly got this wave of support. It took my breath away and I’m so thankful for all the support we’re now getting. There’s a big part of me that wished I’d applied to Tŷ Hafan a lot sooner. Seb has already been in for week-long symptom management stay when the doctors had a good look at him and his meds. As a result of that he’s now on new medication and since then has been much more settled. Until we came to Tŷ Hafan I felt like I was drowning and now I feel like I’m not. So not only is the Dark Run a lot of fun, it helps to raise awareness about what Tŷ Hafan does and raises money for the charity which is vital to them being able to help more families like mine.”

This is the second time Tŷ Hafan is bringing its popular Dark Run to the National Botanic Garden of Wales in the Towy Valley, near Llanarthne, and the event is sponsored by Family Fostering Partners Wales.

“At Family Fostering Partners, we’re delighted to once again be sponsoring Tŷ Hafan’s Dark Run at the National Botanic Garden of Wales”, said Judith Rees from Family Fostering Partners.

She added: “Tŷ Hafan is a charity very close to our hearts, and we’ve seen first-hand the incredible care, facilities, and support they provide to children and families. The fantastic turnout at last year’s event showed just how important their services are to communities across Wales. We’re deeply grateful for the vital work Tŷ Hafan does, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting them by attending this year’s Dark Run.”

James Davies-Hale, head of Fundraising for Tŷ Hafan, said: “As well as having some fright-fully good family fun, by taking part in the Dark Run at the National Botanic Garden of Wales you’ll be helping to ensure that no family has to live their child’s short life alone. We’ve only got 250 spaces though and tickets are selling fast. Run, jog or walk this epic spooky 2.5k fun run – it’s up to you how you do it.

“Your route will take you through gardens, past water features, and around the Great Glass House – the largest single-span glass house in the world, before returning to Millennium Square for another lap, if you dare!”

He added: “We have lit up parts of the grounds for this event, and you can expect music and entertainment along the way. We simply ask that each family or group raises a minimum of £50 in sponsorship because everything you raise helps Tŷ Hafan to reach more children and families who need us. Or you can choose our new non-fundraising ticket option and simply pay a tiny bit more to take part. The choice is yours. You can download your sponsorship form from our website and everyone who takes part will get a free large glowstick and a Dark Run medal.”

Registration opens at 5.45pm and the event starts at 6.30pm.

Tŷ Hafan is also running Dark Run sponsored fun runs in Cyfarthfa Castle, Merthyr Tydfil on Friday, October 17, and at Cardiff’s Bute Park on Saturday , October, 18.
