The Gardener’s Retreat restaurant officially opened at Hitchin Garden Centre after a complete transformation of the dining space.

The redevelopment, part of British Garden Centres’ ongoing investment programme, has more than doubled the restaurant’s capacity and created a modern, welcoming environment with stylish décor and air conditioning.

Ricky Towers, group restaurant director at British Garden Centres, said: “We are thrilled to unveil the new restaurant at Hitchin Garden Centre.

“It has been designed to offer a brighter, more comfortable place for people to enjoy great food within the heart of the garden centre.

“The response from customers so far has been fantastic, and we’re proud that this project has also created valuable new jobs here in Hitchin.

“We look forward to becoming a go-to spot for both regular visitors and those discovering us for the first time.”

The restaurant can now seat up to 250 guests and features a carvery, making it suitable for family gatherings, relaxed lunches, coffee catch-ups and weekend treats.

The expansion has also created about 15 new jobs across kitchen, front-of-house and management roles, and the team is already welcoming visitors with freshly prepared meals and warm hospitality.

The restaurant is open daily from 9am to 5pm, offering a menu of freshly prepared dishes alongside snacks, cakes and drinks.

The company is owned and led by the Stubbs family, who also own and operate Woodthorpe Leisure Park in Lincolnshire.

Founded in 1990 by brothers Charles and Robert Stubbs with the opening of Woodthorpe Garden Centre, the group has expanded rapidly since 2018 with the acquisition of 50 garden centres.

It now employs 3,000 people across its garden centres, restaurants, growing nurseries, distribution centres, Woodthorpe Leisure Park and Woody’s Restaurant & Bar.

The new restaurant is part of the group’s continued investment in improving customer experience and supporting communities through job creation and expanded facilities.
