Gerry Welch

The new name of the Webster Groves Sculpture Garden will honor former longtime mayor Gerry Welch, who championed the development of the 1-acre park in downtown Webster.

The city of Webster Groves and the Webster Groves Arts Commission will hold a public ceremony on Oct. 25 to unveil the “Gerry Welch Sculpture Garden” in recognition of the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history.

Welch, who was first elected mayor in 1998, served for five terms before stepping down in 2022. In addition to public office, Welch is known in the community for her ardent support of the arts.

Welch will be in attendance, along with Webster Groves Mayor Laura Arnold, who will lead a program that features the unveiling of the new sign, designed by local sculptor Andrew Andrasko. The event will also include music from classical fusion band, Bach to the Future, as well as a celebratory toast and light refreshments.

The ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Free street parking in and around the park at North Gore and West Kirkham avenues is available. All are invited.

The park, just north of the Old Webster Business District, opened to the public in May 2014. To celebrate Welch’s legacy, members of the Webster Groves City Council voted unanimously in August 2024 to rename the park in her honor.
